Palenque....

Thats it, we are almost at the end of our stay in Mexico, you get 60 days but we need to move on to cheaper places like Guatemala where we should be by Monday....we have crawled out of the jungle and missed the bus back to San Cristobal by 20 minutes......everything at El Panchan is done at snail pace if at all...it took 2 hours from ordering our breakfast to finishing it at the vegetarian resteraunt in the trees...El Panchan is a couple of miles outside Palenque town itself on the way to the Mayan ruined city of the same name, all along the road are campsites and hotels and the Mayan museum which people travel to in great numbers....El Panchan is a group of small campsites and cabins and a couple of resteraunts just outside the Palenque national park and in the jungle. Once your there it seems hard to leave, down under the trees its pretty dark and damp and full of exotic birds and insects and loads of howling dogs......the best things are the hummingbirds that hover around in the trees and just as the sun is setting the fireflies. Its a kind of hippy atmosphere with strange juggling and chanting going on amongst the trees.....scary indeed, we threw ourselves into finding our inner selves by getting the most luxurious room we could; fans, hotwater, constant cleaning and a kitchenette(which we couldnt use unless we agreed to spend more than a week there, the plug for the fridge was encased in a padlocked wooden box so there was no danger of refridgeration) Venturing out into the woods for our dose of the new age and tofu burgers it was a good place to try and get rid of the illness we have both had since new year....Alan had it first back in Puerto, flu with a fever which we have since heard returned for him and he went back home to the states....we on the other hand have fought it off with the power of herbal remedies, chanting, yoga, live chicken waving and tons of really weird tasting Mexican cough medicine....we still have the illness and we are going back to the cold and the altitude of San Cristobal so we can continue our journey to the Guetemalan border and go to see some Death Metal show tonight in San Cristobal.....Hippies to Satanists in one day, jungle to mountains and out of the meatfree frying pan and into the fires of hell......hope not!! Oh and the Mayan city amongst the jungle; really old, really hot, really busy and really amazing.......http://www.mexperience.com/guide/mexicophotos/palenque.htm
