Yangshe

Well this is not really on the road but a river.
We got to Chongqing which has the reputation of the most polluted city in China. Well not a lot of difference. Built on a steep valley and for a change not a bicycle to be seen.

Ferry was boarded via pontoons which were tied together to form a walkway and it probably could carry about 200 passengers. Cabins were comfortable and resteraunt was good. Not a lot else to do other than watch the scenery pass by and learn to play majong - like dominos.

The river was massive and while we were still a few hundred miles from the new dam there were markers on the hillside to show where the final water level would be by 2009. It had to rise another 40 metres which was going to bury towns and villages for the length of the river.

Overall we spent two and a half days on the ferry and while the gorges were quite spectular the overcast and smoggy weather did not give a true ompression of the view.

As it turned out because of traffic we arrived at the dam at night do only saw it by floodlights. Truly massive and they will still be building it until 2009. Under construction to one side was a series of locks to lift 10,000 tonnes ships 175m up to the final dam level.

Left the dam and stayed overnight at a local hotel and the following day onward to Yangshou.
