Heading North – Kalbarri

On my second week I got a bus up north. It is so big here, it took all day to get to our first stop, Kalbarri . We stopped on the way to see the Pinnacles – my first desert!
Pinnacles

There was only one other person on the bus so I sat next to the driver, Enzo and asked him loads of questions. He was a miner here and knows a lot about land formation but not so much about the animals ‘do bats lay eggs….?’. His family is from Scicily and he likes to play lawn bowls (but mostly because of the cheap alcohol prices at the club).

When we got to Kalbarri we went for dinner with a friend of Enzo’s called Guy. Guy was from France but lived in Algeria for a few years and said his family got kicked out after the handover. They weren’t welcome in France either and had to survive on stealing beans from the fields until their application to live in australia came through. He said he would never go back to France because ‘its full of french people’. He hates them, he said.
We went to a place called Finlay’s BBQ where (if you’re lucky) you get to be insulted by the host. He decided to pick on me which was humiliating but really funny. After dinner we went to a pub and then went for a drive with one of the guys who workes at the restaurant.

Kalbarri
Kalbarri is a beautiful place, I stayed for 3 days. Spent most of my time on the beach, walking around and went to Big River Ranch which is a sanctuary for rescue horses and a riding school. We rode across the Murchison river which was really high – it came up to the horses shoulders. We saw lots of Kangaroos too. Steve who owns the ranch told me he was looking for riders – free accomodation and food if you work for him. But it has to be two week minimum stay and I don’t have that much time, it is a shame.

    Hi Jaime
the fish was the idea of the restaurant owner, i was going to pretend it was real and that i’d caught it but it was actually fibreglass….can you tell?
