Lake Titicaca

This lake is quite beautiful and I am enjoying my stay. Copacabana in Bolivia was pretty boring and it was Bolivia so… Copacabana had a few gringo (and folks from other Latin American countries) hippies selling jewelry and other art. I saw the same in La Paz. I am not quite sure why someone would choose to sell their products in Bolivia given the prices are much lower. Actually, I know exactly why they are there – cheap living and drugs. Even stranger than the economic nonsense is that they make the same products that the indigenous artisans make. So, they are basically stealing the local product designs and screwing over the poor by competing against them. That’s free market for you, but I wonder if any of this dawns on them? Probably not their intention if they could think straight. The other odd thing is the number of rat nest hairdos – I’m sorry, but dreadlocks on white men look absolutely ridiculous… and grotesque.

Got a Feeling Inside Can’t Explain

I wish I could explain why there are places that I just don’t like and places that I love. All I can say is that it is from deep inside. Some places just set off alarms in me that there is something not right or not for me. I’ve learned to try to persevere through these times and sometimes a place grows on me. But then there is Cuba and Bolivia that just didn’t grow well. Puno isn’t suppose to be a nice place according to the travel books, but I have already fallen in love with it. The lake is beautiful, the people are exceptionally friendly, the food is interesting and international, the sun is bright, the air is crisp and it just feels right to me. I can’t explain it any more than that. I grow tired of travel books telling me where I should like and where I should not like. It just seems very disingenuous. In the same respect, you shouldn’t listen to me about these places and how I feel about them. Go out and find out for yourself. Somebody has to like New Jersey 🙂
I could not explain why I loved Tanzania other than to say that it felt like it was inside me… in my DNA… our home. I was worried leaving Bolivia that I was burned out and the last two weeks were not going to be what I wanted them to be. Well that thought is now gone. I love Peru and Peruvians and I can’t explain why nor do I feel like I need to explain why. Peru is my favorite Latin American country. I’m feeling good now, yeah, but can’t explain (Pete Townshend).
