Happy Thanksgiving!

Thursday, November 23rd, 2006

Just want to extend the greeting to my American friends and relatives.  This is the first time I have been out of the country over my favorite holiday.  Tomorrow will be a fairly normal day here in paradise with Spanish classes, maybe some swimming in the ocean and an excursion to a lagoon to see turtles, igunanas and crocodiles.  “Maybe” for the swimming because today was the first time I have ever tried surfing and I am sore where my ribs lie on the board.  I always knew surfing was very difficult and my respect has only increased exponentially now that I have tried.  I will go out again on Friday.  Apparently, this soreness is normal and will go away after you do it a few times.  In the meantime, ouch!  We went to “the point” where the waves are small and fairly consistent whereas the waves below my place at Playa Zicatela are very powerful and not to be played with,  Today was a perfectly clear and dry day and the views of the mountains while sitting on the surfboard were superb.  Pelicans flew very close.  Unfortunately, I was gasping half the time from sheer exhaustion as well as worrying about incoming waves and the umpteen things you have to remember while out there in order to enjoy them as much as I would normally.  I think I would prefer to be out there comfortably in a kayak taking in those sites, but when in Rome…

And North America (Mexico) as I have recently learned.  I still think of Mexico as part of Central America due to cultural, linguistic and historic reasons, but I guess it is part of North America due to geographical reasons.  Actually, ... [Continue reading this entry]
