Amsterdam New Years Eve 2006/07

February 17th, 2007

Following a series of random circumstances, several fellow Boots were in Amsterdam for New Years Eve, among them Pete, Jenn, and good ol’ Bill. From Boston. We call him BostonBill. Bill and I have had a good run thus far. Over the past year we hung out a few times, in NYC, Chicago, and Portland. It was only logical that it would lead to an international event. In the few days prior to NYE, as people showed up, I got to play tour guide showing everybody around. Finally, all that “research” of hanging out in Amsterdam is coming to use. BnA Partytime in London!

December 23rd, 2006

The time has come again… travel somewhere and drink with travel friends! In London this time… working my way around the world. I feel fairly unprepared, yet again, for this trip. That seems to be a theme recently, but it always works out. Ok, so I did at least book the plane ticket in advance and made a reservation at the hostel… but I didn’t even choose the hostel. Our party organizer Michelle handled that. I’m just goin with the flow. I have no clue what I’ll be doing yet during the non-party times. I’ve been to London once before… 14 years ago, with my grandmother. But that’s a good thing, because I’ve already seen most of the sights, and it’s way too bloody expensive right now to actually spend money in London! I did at least buy a nice laminated city map with the tube lines, and write down the directions to the hostel…. Read the rest of this entry »

New Feature! Videos of Live Music!

November 1st, 2006

I’ve started a new page featuring short video clips of street (or otherwise somehow culturally relevant) performances I take while travelling. There’s a couple up now, and I hope more will come…

You’ll be able to quickly find the page in the future on the right side under Pages, titled Live Music from Street Performers Around the World!

Czech ya later (Har-dee Har-Har…)

October 31st, 2006

Once again, I decided to not sleep before returning home. Having to catch a 7:30 train, and not being entirely sure which station to go to (the ticket said the main station, but when I checked the schedule online, it said a different one way in the north of Prague… it ended up being them main station) I just stayed up the night before. It worked out, because I was completely out all the way from Praha to Berlin, and most of the time from Berlin to Duisburg. Unfortunately, in Duisburg I was a bit slow getting up and off the train, and it pulled away as I was still about to get off. Shit. Read the rest of this entry »

Pražký hrad (Prague Castle)

October 31st, 2006

I made plans to meet up with Francisco and Kath the next day and we’d go check out the castle (since I never actually made it inside previously…) As I was leaving, the others from my conservatory, Sofia, Robert, and their two other friends, were heading out as well, and asked if I’d like a ride to the castle with them. I figured that’d work out great, and could surprise Francisco by showing up with them, as we’re all friends. Read the rest of this entry »

The Bone Church

October 31st, 2006

The ossuary in the All Saints’ Chapel (kapel Všech svatý) in Kutná Hora (well, actually Sedlec) is decorated in human bones. Sounds pretty strange, huh? Morbid, in fact…

The Missions

October 31st, 2006

I successfully made my way to Hostel Elf. Got a bed for 320Kc, and then got 5% off for having a student card. Woo! After dropping off my pack, I sat down on the common area couches to figure out what I was doing. There were lots of Aussies here, too. Before leaving Ceský Krumlov, an Aussie couple that had already been through Prague gave me a map, detailing a bar where I needed to go if I needed to pick up anything. Before long, it became apparent that a mission was in order.

Český Krumlov

October 30th, 2006

Went back to the castle today to do the tour, but first grabbed some breakfast at the restaurant attached to the hostel. The special was 99Kč (Hostel 99, Restaurant 99… get it?) Not quite a full English, but close… eggs, meat, potatoes, fruit, toast, and coffee or juice. Not sure what they put in the eggs for seasoning, but it was damn good. The potatoes, too. Went to the castle to buy the tickets and decided on the Tour I in English (50Kč student, 100Kč full price), but still had about two hours before the next one started, so I went back to wander some more. Stopped by the Egon Schiele Museum to check that out, but it was closed for preparation of a new installation. Read the rest of this entry »

Exploring South Bohemia, Česká Republika

October 30th, 2006

I seem to have a habit of starting my travels this way… busy. Took the 8:07 train from Amsterdam to Duisberg, a two hour trip, and had about a half hour to wait there. In Amsterdam an Aussie, Claire, had asked me a question about which train to get on, so we grabbed some quick food together in Duisburg before getting on the next train to Berlin together, a four hour ride. She was staying in Berlin, but I had 40 minutes to get the next train to Praha, another five hours away. I decided that I might go directly to Český Krumlov and finish in Prague at the end of the week, because my friend from the Conservatory, Francisco, will be there for a couple days then with some friends, so we could hang out. I arrived in Praha around 21:00 and the next train to Český Krumlov was at 0:23 for two and a half hours to České Budějovice and then another two and a half hour wait til the 5:28 train gets to Krumlov around 6:30. When I arrive it’ll be nearly 24 hours of travelling, and I didn’t sleep the night before to make sure I got to Amsterdam Centraal Station in time to start this whole trip. Oy vey. Resolved!

October 18th, 2006

So, despite the problems I was having, I still really wanted to go to Prague… so I went to the train station to see if they could do anything for me. After a long time of waiting with the clerk at the station as she went through timetables, she was able to find me another train to Prague! Woo! It’s more expensive than I originally wanted, and not the most ideal times, and I have to make more connections, but that’s ok. Live and learn… and book immediately when you find the deal you want!
