Bringing in the new year bangkok style… whatever that might mean

we ended up staying in trat for the night as we were all to tired and lazy to do anything else. we went to a night food market for dinner and ate heaps of deliciou vegeatbes and spicy meat things with rice for $.50… good deal. in the morning we went for breakfast at one of wan chuk’s friends’ restaurant and then got on a super luxorious VIP bus with foot rests, televisios, and butlered drinks and snacks. when we got into bangkok, nat’s (a.k.a. wan chuk) girlfriend named Tuk met us at the bus station and we all went to Jao’s house by taxi. Jao lives with his friend Bee who is this kind of crazy spoiled little rich boy from singapore but who is half dutch half thai or somehting. they live in a three story townhouse and jess, nat, tuk and i got the top floor. after arriving we ate some food and then went to jao’s favorite bar called the witch’s tavern which is an american-esque type of dive with the heinously overpriced drinks (5$) which were rectafied by the super cute thai band which was almost negated by a mostly terrible line-up of american un-favorites they were crooning, which was salvaged only by the silliness of the friends we were with. all in all a good time.
the next day we woke up ready to shop. the thai’s went bowling (i think this was the most excerise they ever got- every one was sore and tired later that day) and we went to the patunam market.
shoping in thailand is utterly rediculous. everything is cool and beautiful there are millions of people shopping, and jillions of trillion-shop filled venues to do it in. jesus we wre ereally in over our heads but we gave it a good shot. we didn’t really buy anything of importance- me a long sleeve shirt, jess 27 pairs of earings. that night we met our friends at the wiotch’s tavern for ladies night which inclue dfree drinks for women with explicit instructions NOT to pass them off to men. very nice. the next day we said goodbye to jao, tuk and nat as they were heading up north to a small vilage to celebrate the new year. they invited us but we were not done shopping and could not leave bangkok just yet. we moved our tsuff to a hostel for the day and planned on bringing ourselves and our stuff to Ning’s that night.
If i haven’t mentioned her yet, Ning is a friend of Joan who works with Joe Maffs in NYC. when last in bangkok we left some extra clothes at her house and she offered us a place to stay whenevere we were next in town. so anyway it was time to shop again. we decided to hit up Siam Center. it is difficult to describe the utter MADNESS and JOY and HORROR that is siam center. siam center, as i understand it, consists of 3 giant malls; Siam Paragon, Siam Center, and Siam Discovery which also houses Siam Sea World. then outside of these is siam square which is 5 seperte shopping plazas like outdoor malls all with young super hip fashion. through the alleyways of these plazas live other even lager hidden shopping plazas. the whole place is teeming with rediculous fashiopnable peops. I think at least one in four thais must be gay as many of the couples walking around were super hip same sex youth and adults. i bought some jeans, some wash cloths, and maybe something else. jess bought a shirt, some more earings and maybe some othr things. we got some coffee at an almost authentic diner and met a super sketchy cop that worked with us to try and figure out wht day of the week it was. after this we taxi’d it home, ate some sushi, grabbed our bags, picked up some flowers and showed up at NIng’s at almost 11pm exhausted and shopped out. the next day we took a taxi in the morning to khao san road which is the super backpacker touristy area of bangkok where we stayed when we first got to bangkok from siem reap. we did a little shoping, ate some indian food and took the sky train back to Ning’s. i got a one hour foot massage for 100 baht ($2.50) which was only medicocre since i was parnoid that she was going to mishandle my toenail. then back to Ning’s just in time for dinner which included lots of varied delicious things like grilled fish with shitake mushrooms, soft tofu with chopped carots and tomatos, shrimp, etc. we ate with Ning, her mother, an aunt, Uncle Wat and i think that’s it. then they decided it was time for me to deal with me toe….
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaagh! please no! leave me and my toe alone! we are doing just fine! Uncle Wat and a new aunt, Aunt Youy, his wife load me and jess up in the benz and talk to another uncle on the phone who i a doctor. i think we re headed to his house but then he decides he has no tools at home so we must go to the hospital. he meets us at the emergency room and we all go in toether, me jess, the two uncles and aunt Youy. i sit on the hospital bed. he wiggles my loose toenail, asks me if it hurts and then befoe i respond he has yanked it out with his gloved hand. uuuuuuuuuuuugh. it is more disgusting looking than painful. i already have about 1/4 inch of new nail. ew it loks kind of inhumane, like a stomach wihtout a bellybutton kind of thing. then my toe got an alcohol bath (yowza!) and a new outfit; gauze and a little knit hat to go over it. my toe, while a little more sensitive (since skin is exposed that is not meant to see the light of day) actually hurts less because i am not walking funny to keep the nail on and it also used to hurt whenver the nail touched anything but now everything is cool. they gave me the nail to keep which i will put in my scrap book for all to see…. yum.
Ning and her family left today to go up north to an orchid resort. they kidnly invited us but we decided to stay behind and mind their empty mansion for them. NIng’s family is Chinese and they own a bunch of rubber plantations and factories. They export this rubber to Michelin tires and i guess they make loot. their home is huge in a gated community in the “Beverly Hills” section of Bangkok. it is a giant white house with pillars and balconies and a handful of new mercedes lined up in front of the house. so it’s ours for the weekend… NICE!
tody is new years eve. i am generally the new years grinch but i am feelign the party spirit a little bit. we will investigate party options. we ate our new years eve dinner for lunch- a bad ass italian buffet at a super splash restaurant. we ate salad with shaved parmesan and pesto mozzerlla until we puked aong with delicios pasta. needless to say we both ate until we were in desperaet pain which is where the reader will find us right now. I am anxiously awaiting Joelle and my new cousin paul’s wedding video to appear up on the website they sent me. they were married hours ago in Jamaica and i am very happy for them and wish i could be celebrating with them in person and not just in spirit. Jo and Paul i wish you both so much good luck and happiness in 2006 and for the rest of your days!
I am going to search the internt now for a new year’s eve reggae party. we will be in bangkok at least until tuesday so if someone can efd-ex me some biolage shampoo i would really appreciate it.
happy new year from bangkok!

the idea of your toe nail in an album is enough to make me puke…but thinking about your toe with a “new outfit” as you put it makes it a bit more entertaining.

Enjoy the mansion, and by this point, if i have any idea of world time, it’s the new year for you already so enjoy!
