Typical London weekend + the West End
Well, for the weekend just gone Mara and I had planned to visit Buck Palace and see the changing of the guards and the state rooms etc (open whilst the Queen is in Scotland on holidays) however, Friday night was the ‘last weekend in London’ celebrations for Carrie and the other flatmates sooo we didn’t wake up early enough on Saturday morning to go! I bought a new dress/top Friday after work (half price summer sale) and wore that out – nice black and blue silk and unline anything I already owned. I didn’t actually drink much on Friday night at all (ahrmm quite unlike Mara!), just danced an awful lot so had biggest blisters on my big toes and sore feet overall which wasn’t too nice. Carrie actually had a glass dropped/smashed on her foot accidentally though so her toe was quite nasty! Luckily for her the alcohol had hit home and so she felt nothing!!! Me being the sober one, fixed her up with TCP (like Dettol) prior to sleep & all was healed over in the morning.
I had motivation on Saturday to do something and Mara had just enough to come downstairs to The Cafe for bacon and eggs and some nice cold juice to get the day started! The day wasn’t too bad either, so once we’d finally left the house we headed for Borough Markets under London Bridge and the produce was fantastic! All organic, so I’m guessing probably a little expensive however, we bought some really nice vegies for dinner – made a salad of sweet potato, baby spinach leaves, cherry tomatoes, jersey royal potatoes, toasted pine nuts and german wiesswurst (sp?) sausage plus balsamic dressing — the nice thick almost molasses like dressing that they use in Oscars Restaurant (Alice Springs) and it tasted sooo good! So yeah, we ate really nicely Saturday night! All the flatmates had a night in too! I think Friday night did it for most haha even though it’s their last weekend here.
To backtrack a little – after the markets (yeah, we did it in wrong order & had to carry everything around), we went to Leicester Square to see the WEST END LIVE, a free concern by the City of Westminster which showcases most of the big west end musicals that are currently playing.
So they had tastes of Stomp, Chicago, Sound of Music, Mary Poppins, Joseph etc. Around the big stage area, they had lots of little tents with other activities too. You could learn to Bollywood-Dance, have henna tattoos done, meet Dr Who and his robot (no idea of name as I don’t watch the program) and Mara and I had our photo taken and then digitally mixed with Rattie and the chef from Rattatouille (will fix spelling and add the photo later!!!). So for a free event it was fantastic!
Sunday Mara and I woke up to rain, dark skies and rain. Hmm… yep, gave Buck Palace a miss on Sunday too. Instead, we got rugged up, grabbed our umbrellas and headed out to the Camden Markets. Described in books as being goth, alternative etc, etc it indeed was. It’s great how all the markets here have different things – hardly anything the same! I saw a great bag that Mai would probably like for her birthday… but I’m still thinking on it, and about the postage to Australia! I also bought a jacket. A brown one to add to my collection (my black one’s still good and my fave cream one needs dry cleaning after I wore it to a pub few weeks ago). Umm I also bought a shirt for £3 which is a bargain you just couldn’t walk by! Mara liked a shirt but didn’t buy it yet, as she’s not a ‘buy it now’ person like I am! Must be because usually when I’m shopping somewhere it’s only for a few days before returning to Alice Springs!!! Camden also had some great jumpers and zip-ups, which we are both returning to get once the weather gets colder!
Speaking of cold – yesterday was chilly, as was last night (got into my winter pajamas early) adn today’s cold outside too! It’s raining and our roof at Mile End leaks :o( and there’s parts of England which are totally flooding which is SO ODD as we didn’t think it had been raining that much – just drizzle really but must be because it’s consistent.
Last night we had pork chops (not too expensive amazingly enough) and salad (celery, tomato, advocado) with the rest of the sweet potato, some carrotts and toasted pinenuts and eggplant thinly sliced. The boys commented about the ‘exotic eating of late’ and Mara and I were like no… this is how we usually eat at home! It’s out turn Tuesday night to cook for the house again…. not sure what we’ll do this week!
