Cairo Day 1: Museum

So we flew to Cairo early this morning from Luxor. Everything has been going well.

We went to the Egyptian Museum today and will do the Pyramids tomorrow.
The next day we fly to Sharm el-Sheikh and the fun begins.

We are staying in a sick posh hotel, the Cairo Marriot. We couldn’t stop laughing at how out of place we looked walking in with our backpacks.

Random:
Food: We haven’t found the food here to be very good. We tried kushari and fuul, two common Egyptian dishes. Fuul tastes just like refried beans, like from Taco Bell. Kushari was ok. Jim also ate pigeon just to say he did. Basically, we haven’t eaten anything really delicious.

Weather & Sun: The sun beats down hard here. There is never a cloud in the sky and it’s weird. It makes you appreciate clouds!

Harrassment: I haven’t experience that much harassment. I wonder how different it would be if I was traveling alone. There have been several times a man would make a comment under his breath when we’d walk by, like “very nice”. It was amusing to me because I looked like shit the whole time we were traveling, so I never took it mean anything. It’s not like I was walking around looking sexy. However, joking aside, it does add a tiny bit of weirdness.

Clothing: I would say 98% of women wear a headscarf and 85% wear the full, long robes (usually black). I just can’t imagine having to wear those. I seems so incredibly, totally oppressive. And I don’t even mean like, women’s-rights-oppressive, but just like, it’s-really-hot-oppressive. I can’t imagine. A typical ignorant thought I had occasionally: I would wonder when a woman would look at me with my Western clothing if she would think one of two things: 1) I was a whore, or 2) maybe she would wished she could dress like me and wear whatever she wanted. Or maybe something in the middle. Or nothing at all.
