BootsnAll Travel Network

Welcome aboard people

I'm almost back on the road! Hello. This is the blog I (occasionally) wrote during my travels in 2007 and 2008. Now I'm off to India for the summer, working for UNICEF in New Dehi, so I thought I may as well start writing again. I'll try to be more consistent this time...

Passing through Paraguay.

March 5th, 2008

If God loves a trier, the Paraguay has to be one of his favourites. This country may not make world headlines very often, but in 1865 its leader decided it was powerful enough to take on Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay, at the same time. Unfortunately, it was indeed not powerful enough. They were outnumbered 10 to 1 (go figure) and lost 26% of their territory. Even worse, they lost half their population.

That little story is how I bored Jenny on our way into Paraguay, while we were relaxing on our executive bus. Finally, I got a good bus! Tried to calculate how many hours I’ve now spent on long haul buses. Somewhere around 150 I think.

Iguassu Falls

March 5th, 2008

According to just about every book and tourist, the Iguassu Falls have to be seen from the Argentinian side, and not the Brazilian. Apparently the Brazilian side is more expensive and doesn’t get you as up close and personal with the 250 or so waterfalls. Well the Brazilians must have heard these rumours and made some quick plans to change things around. We had long debated whether we should try skip over to Argentina for a better look or not but on first glance we were fairly sure we’d come to the right place.

Carnival in Sao Paulo

February 29th, 2008

I’ve decided Carnival is like a 5 years old’s birthday party, with expensive hallowe’en costumes, and a big dash of gay pride thrown in. All this is mixed together and marched down a runway for hours on end. Apparently somewhere along the way the start of lent is celebrated, but the only biblical reference I saw was the float containing the dancing bishops.

Chilling in Uruguay

February 29th, 2008

So I went to Uruguay. The way Lonely Planet opens it’s chapter on one place, Punta Del Este, is “Ok, here’s the plan: wax it, buff it at the gym and then plonk it on the beach“. And how right they were. So, I may not have followed their instructions but I did have a sun filled few days at what is known as South America’s St. Tropez.

People in Uruguay are unbelievably friendly. Myself and an Austrian girl were trying to make our way through town with a guidebook, and every time we stopped for more than 5 seconds someone would come over offering help! Read the rest of this entry »

Wine tasting in Mendoza

February 11th, 2008

We made it Bariloche after that bus journey, but because of that bus journey could do nothing but sleep for two days. So sleep we did, in the very cool and laid back hostel. On our last day there Ylva casually dropped it into the conversation that Bariloche is the chocolate capital of Argentina. That decided the morning’s activity. We stocked up, on what was possibly the best chocolate I’ve ever eaten and headed off to the next stop on our tour, Mendoza.

This place is known for wine. It seems to be the only reason people come here. It has a lot of bodegas (vineyards) around the outskirts of the town, and visitors can either get a fancy tour around or rough it on bicycles.

We sort of did a mixture of both. Stupidly, we let our hostel talk us into booking an expensive tour. The only difference between expensive tour and roughing it on bicycles is the pick up in a fancy car, rather than taking the bus. Our car picked us up an hour late, shortening our wine time (I’m still angry and bitter about that as I write – quite a while after).

Bus Journey from Hell

February 4th, 2008

Hello from the bus of doom

(Just as I typed that we hit a pothole that made everyone scream and a shower of dust fall from the overhead vents – argh)

So we decided to take another bus. Most people might have some sense after 2 days on a bus and maybe possibly fly back to where they started. But not us. We’re here to do things properly and we want to see all of Argentina.

This bus is taking us from El Calafate to Bariloche. 9 hours into the trip I awoke to find someone had relieved me of my ipod. Now usually I might say, ‘Thanks I have too much crap with me anyway’ but not when my ipod is involved. With these 36 hour buses it was the only thing keeping me sane. Now I have to face the next 24 hours of this journey in silence. In her defence, Ylva has offered to sing all the songs I want to listen to, but buses seem to make her sleepy so the babble of German guys getting terribly excited with their card game is all I have for now.

Award time!

January 31st, 2008

Things have been a little slow lately since someone took a liking to my laptop charger in Argentina. I finally found a replacement so the blog will be back on track soon.

In the meantime….if you´d like…. you could help me win an award? Only if you want to! It´s the 2008 Blogger Choice Awards. Nothing crazy. Getting nominated involved a friend saying

`Hey, you wanna go for that?´

And me replying;

´Ya sure why not, we´ve another hour to kill til our next mealtime´.

I think the address is http://www.bloggerschoiceawards.com/categories/25?page=81 or http://www.bloggerschoiceawards.com/blogs/show/40078 but if I get more votes I´ll move up the ranking and move page. If it moves, and you´re still determined to vote, you can do a search for Claire Takes Over the World.

Thank you all! I´ll send you guys postcards from the award ceremony (to make up for the lack of postcards from the big trip!)

So I passed by a glacier the other day…

January 24th, 2008

The 5th of January 2008 was the day I became an environmental nut. No more plane rides or electricity for me!

We visited the Perito Moreno Glacier down in El Calafate, very southern Argentina. I had extremely high hopes for this because getting there wasn’t quite the highlight of my trip so far. First, we bade Christian farewell as he went off back to Nicaragua to do some more work. Then we headed to the bus station, stayed right where the bus was supposed to leave from but somehow missed it. Little bugger left from a different platform. Luckily the owner was a nice guy who packed 6 of us who were in the same boat into taxis to catch the bus. Got on to meet some angry heads. Seems they didn’t like waiting for the stupid tourists who missed the bus. After that 2 hour ride came the 23 hour one, 3 hours after that ended we jumped on another that lasted 10 hours, and almost directly after that was a 5 hour one. During that we were made watch the same terrible Argentinian movie twice! When it all ended we got out of the bus station and walked in the wrong direction for a long time. Some ladies put us straight and we found our hostel, only to be told the person I’d made the booking with was a daughter of someone and doesn’t actually work there, so we we were on the hunt again. So after all that, I was prepared to point my hairdryer at this glacier if it didn’t live up to expectations.
