Easter weekend in South Korea

9 Apr

We taught the kids at school about easter. They are clueless to the holiday, most of the kids just liked dying eggs and hunting for them. Amy, Liz, and I dressed up like bunnies and hid eggs in cute little paper baskets we made in school (thanks to Amy’s creativity.)

They kids liked making cigarette castles on the bench better than the egg hunt.

I totally needed a night out after that crazy day/week.

The cherry blossom festival was this weekend.
amy's photography trumps mine every time.

All the trees around town are blooming over with white little flowers dancing in the wind. The actual festival is the Korean spin on a Jersey carnival… fully equipped with carnies, crappy train rides, and popped rice or roasted mealworms instead of popcorn. I tried one, they taste like dirty dead bug nuts.

There were dancers, and geisha, and all sorts of crazies out in the beautiful weather.

Also, there is a beautiful temple amidst the craziness. I think it’s beautiful.

We headed to the beach for a delicious Kimchi Bokumbok dinner and some sparkler fun on the sand.

Afterwards Jon and I headed to Harlem to check out the B Boy festival. I heard a group of break dancers would be there showing their moves along with some MCs. We were the only white folk in the room. The atmosphere was intense. We missed the B Boy performance, but I chatted up some of the dancers who gave me “respect” (and a fist pound) for being from the east coast and appreciating their moves.

A few hours later: Easter morning, 9 am, my phone is ringing incessantly.
I answer, “uhhmgrumblehello..?”
“Lis?”
Bubbs!” (In a scratchy frog voice)
“Happy Easter!”
AHHHH. After very few hours of sleep and a long fun hip-hop b.boy competition I chat up mom and bubbs for a little while. After catching up on the latest Jersey family gossip I check out the clock… 10:15… AH I’m supposed to meet Dana and others at the bus station at 10:30 to go hiking! EEK! I quickly throw a banana and a yogurt in my bag, throw on some old dirty clothes (I figured, I’m just gonna get more dirty), and rushed to catch a cab to the station.

Amy, Jon, and I arrived at the station just on time. We met up with Dana (from Canada, Amy(2 from Cali), and Lucy (English girl) and hopped on the first bus/taxi/bus to the mountain.

Of course it immediately started raining.

We wandered around the tourist center and checked out the buddhist temples that sat at the foot of the mountain. We actually saw people praying in a temple, it was a very zen experience.

Lis, wow–that’s what I imagined Korea to be like–very authentic and old-looking culture. You look wonderful and authentic–not old though. I love the cherry blossom trees. Maybe I’ll plant one in our yard. Love you. Momma
