Chuesok and the DMZ

Chuesok and the DMZ

‘Chuesok’ is the Korean Thanksgiving. After celebrating with our students, Amy and I celebrated the harvest season by testing our physical, mental, and emotional endurance… we rode our bikes to the DMZ (the delmilitarized zone between north and south korea.) It was fairly exhausting, and now that we’re back and safe, I can say it was my favorite adventure thus far in my lifetime.

Summer 2007

Summer 2007

Oh, Korea. I love this place, most days. The summer weather ranged from clear sunny skies, to RAIN RAIN RAIN, to so hot i have to sleep with wet rags across my face. Though the weather isn’t always exactly what I’d like, I suck it up. I’ve had some really fun adventures. (more…)

Boryeong Mud Festival

Summertime in Korea is in full swing. Boryeong, a town a few hours south of Seoul, is well known in Korea for it’s mineral-rich mud flats on the west coast. Every year they host a festival which brings in millions of Koreans and many foreigners to run around and play in the mud. Can you imagine something more fun?

Odaeson Bicycle Extravaganza IV

We finally accomplished riding our bikes to the Odaeson, 40some kilometers away from home. It rained, it misted, it poured… but we had ponchos. We cycled for hours and hours, got through two flat tires, and made it there before dark WITH a place to sleep.

I don’t feel like writing about it. Its big. It celebrates the Korean harvest. We ate a ton of delicious street food (and saw some really nasty stuff.) Beautiful. We had a ton of fun.

Odaesan National Park

Odaesan National Park

Deep within a magical forest in the hills of eastern Korea… Buddhist monks, bathed in candlelight, chant in rhythmic progression. Their multiharmonic voices are accentuated by the hollow wooden tapping of the Moktak, a wooden and bell-shaped percussion instrument.

They pray to the ashes of Buddha; the temple that houses them is one of five on this continent. ‘How did I wind up here?’ My mind wanders. A breeze passes through the treetops, sounds like rushing water. A touch of blue light lingers in the sky, as the post-dusk clouds prevent any stars from being seen.

Yong Pyeong Bicycle Extravaganza III

Sweat was dripping. The hill was totally intense. We passed by familiar sights: shadeville, poop mountain, the lady with the dog, the rickety bridge, the babbling brook, and finally stopped for a break at the Daegwaiyung Museum.

“I’ve got Seoul, but I’m not a soldier…”

“I’ve got Seoul, but I’m not a soldier…”

My first experience in the “big city” was a total adventure, to say the least. Amy, Amy, and I… the three musketeers… set off at 6:25am Saturday morning for a weekend of shopping, eating, drinking, and dancing our asses off.

Jongdongjin and Odeason Bicycle Extravaganza I & II

I’ve been making great use of my bike. So much, in fact, that the brakes are already starting to go… and there is a constant ‘jangle-jangle’ when I pedal hard. Aside from that, I am consistantly having nightmares about my tire going flat while on a ride, or my bike being stolen. These are my greatest fears while in Korea… how beautiful is this life.
