Cambodia (jan 20 -27)
Cambodia was easier travelling…….Siem Reap was filled with people all coming to see the famous Angkor Wat. It was so incredible to be here !!!!!! Some people on a bus ride earlier said that it was better than the Pyramids of Giza! Although we hadn’t made our way there yet, we were sure it couldn’t be true. As magnificent as Angkor Wat was, we both enjoyed the overgrown Tha Prohm area the most……Here, errie overgrown HUGE stone faces looked at you through a jungle of tree roots and vines. Even though there were a lot of people in the area, the surrounding brook and outside walls were places you could just sit and listen to birds, frogs and other wildlife. can you imagine walking through the forest and just coming across something like this???! It was magical………….
I tried my hand at eating a steak at this new gourmet restaurant owned and operated by this guy from California…….I guess I wasn’t over my stomach bug and it didn’t nourish me very long! SO SAD!
After 3 days here, we moved onto Phenom Pehn where we visited S-21…..A museum now that used to be a tortue and prison centre after the Vietnam War when the Khmer Rouge were in power and Pol Pot was running the show. This place was so horrendous………but we realized the need to not only educate ourselves on the beauty that these countries have to offer like with their magical Tha Prohm but also the need to learn about the history that has made them what and who they are today – no matter how aweful it is. I’m glad that we didn’t get the chance to go to the Killing Fields. I think one or the other is plenty of trauma to ones psyche for one day. And this was all so recent it’s frightening.
We may not have stayed very long in Cambodia and we may regret that later. For now, we’re ok with that.
