Getting Started
Our trip planning was initiated a year ago in that bottle of wine and it got us thinking of all of those places we would like to see now, while we’re young enough for our hips not to be plagued by arthritis and so that we are quick enough to run away from any really BIG bugs! Since we have already travelled to Europe including Amsterdam, France, Italy, Greece and have most recently been to Rarotonga and New Zealand, we thought our next adventure should take us to Asia…..It started by planning a trip to China and then started to encompass so much more!
Our plan now:
October 1 – leave Vancouver at 10am for Nova Scotia where we will visit my family for a month and drop off my cats to stay with mom and dad. The month should give them enough time to adjust to the drastic change and also give us a lot of time for really getting in a good visit.
November 2 – 5am we leave Nova Scotia one way to JFK to catch our connecting flight one-way to Bangkok, Thailand!!
The rest is just good old rough planning with a kind of narrowed down itinerary that goes something like this:
Thailand, Phillipines (3 months)
Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam (2 months)
China (3 months)
Nepal (1 month)
India (2 months)
Africa (3 months)
South America (4 months)
….give or take a couple of months depending on what’s happening and what’s exciting. We didn’t want to plan so far in advance……..who wants to plan their return when they haven’t even left yet!?
As we started this whole adventure the first thing we thought about was, of course, the bad things that could happen! I think it’s actually my fault that these horrible things come to mind, but anyhow, we started looking into what immunizations we should get for our adventure. Now you need to understand, we NEVER get sick and NEVER get the flu shot. We think our immune systems need a jolt every now and then to exercise itself – it seems to be working. Maybe we get sniffles for a couple of days, but that’s it! It really bites that we have never fully used our sick days! I think I used 2 in the 6.5years at work and Andre, I think used 1 in his 5 years!
We visited the Travel Clinic and were asked to fill out a questionnaire detailing where and when we were going. As it turns out, we pretty much were recommened to get one of everything! So we started with the ones we probably should have received a couple of years ago like the Hep A and B. Soon after we ran through Rabies, Japanese Encephalitis, Typhoid, Meningococcal Meningitis, Yellow Fever and a booster for Tetanus/Diphtheria/Polia. Our arms are worth a fortune……. 🙂

Hi Guys!
WOW! I can’t believe you are doing this!
Patricia, did you ever think when we were friends in high school, how DIFFERENTLY our lives would turn out? Me here, married, divorced and now raising my two delightful kids on my own, and YOU are off travelling the world, livin’ it up!
I have to say, it sounds awfully exciting, although I can’t personally imagine doing it! You mentioned that you NEVER get sick, well I am ALWAYS sick, so I would have typhoid fever or something horrible within 3 hours of landing on foreign soil!
I can’t wait to see what adventures await you! I am truely happy for you and Andre and I am looking forward to seeing you when you get to Nova Scotia. I hope you will be able to visit for a good day, at least, and we can laugh and talk and catch up!
Love ya guys!
Paula
