Te Papa, the shrubbery of doom, and much GG ranting

So – I went to the national museum, Te Papa, today. It was ok. They had some Maori cultural stuff, a good exhibit on NZ invasive species, some stuff on earthquakes, and some cool videos about people talking about their favourite piece of NZ land. The best part was a very cool modern marae with a big gorgeous stained glass window and lots of modern wood sculptures.

Then I stopped by Cool Britannia, got myself some vinegar hula hoops and a smoothie on the way back to the hostel, which was showing HP 4, which I haven’t seen since opening night in NYC. A few notes; a) I’m fine with them needing to change some of the plot to make it all fit into a movie. But first of all the triwizard tournament must be the most boring spectator sport ever – the kids don’t get to see anything.  And – Harry wins the dragon challenge, despite flying around the school, falling off his broom, destroying a bridge, and falling into a chasm. What the hell were the others doing to get a worse time than that?!? b) Dumbledore being super pissed off the entire film was a really interesting direction to take with the character, Mr. Gambone. And c) I need to go reread some m15m now.

HARRY: There was Some Leather Jacket Guy! With some chavvy blonde! They got in a police box and flew away!

AAAAND the big news today; the Golden Globe NOMS!!! Which, incidentally, suck. Which might be the first time I’ve said that. I generally really like who the GGs pick, but this year? Not so much.

Looking at the TV picksAnalyzing the movie picks. The snubs.

The nominees;

MOVIES

BEST MOTION PICTURE DRAMA
American Gangster
Atonement
Eastern Promises
The Great Debaters
Michael Clayton
No Country for Old Men
There Will Be Blood

Ummm… couldn’t make up your minds, much? How on earth did they end up with 7 nominees? Where the hell did the Great Debaters come from?  And Eastern Promises? really?

BEST MOTION PICTURE MUSICAL OR COMEDY
Across the Universe
Charlie Wilson’s War
Hairspray
Juno
Sweeney Todd

Yay for Across the Universe getting a nod, boo on Charlie Wilson (gag me now), big yay for Juno and Sweeney. I think this is the first time that I can remember that more musicals than comedies were nominated. And thank god knocked up wasn’t included.

BEST DIRECTOR
Tim Burton, Sweeney Todd
Joel and Ethan Coen, No Country for Old Men
Julian Schnabel, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
Ridley Scott, American Gangster
Joe Wright, Atonement

Ok – pretty straight forward, although I could see Ridley Scott being bumped or someone else come oscar time.

BEST ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE DRAMA
George Clooney, Michael Clayton
Daniel Day-Lewis, There Will Be Blood
James McEvoy, Atonement
Viggo Mortensen, Eastern Promises
Denzel Washington, American Gangster

Again – Eastern Promises? Really? And where the hell is Christian Bale’s nod for Rescue Dawn???
BEST ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE DRAMA
Cate Blanchett, Elizabeth: The Golden Age
Julie Christie, Away From Her
Jodie Foster, The Brave One
Angelina Jolie, A Mighty Heart
Keira Knightley, Atonement

Thank god Angie was nominated.  Otherwise, I’d have to consider a total boycott.
BEST ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE MUSICAL OR COMEDY
Johnny Depp, Sweeney Todd
Ryan Gosling, Lars and the Real Girl
Tom Hanks, Charlie Wilson’s War
Philip Seymour Hoffman, The Savages
John C. Reilly, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story

Yay Johnny Depp!! Although I’d prefer to see Michael Cera up here rather than John C. Reilly, if you’re going to go the serious comedy route.

BEST ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE MUSICAL OR COMEDY
Amy Adams, Enchanted
Nikki Blonsky, Hairspray
Helena Bonham Carter, Sweeney Todd
Marion Cotillard, La Vie en Rose
Ellen Page, Juno

Yeah, I don’t think even Ellen Page stands a chance against Marion Cotillard.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE
Casey Affleck, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
Javier Bardem, No Country for Old Men
Philip Seymour Hoffman, Charlie Wilson’s War
John Travolta, Hairspray
Tom Wilkinson, Michael Clayton

Thank god Casey Affleck is on here, if Sam Rockwell couldn’t be, too. Please, please please let him win.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE
Cate Blanchett, I’m Not There
Julia Roberts, Charlie Wilson’s War
Saiorse Ronan, Atonement
Amy Ryan, Gone Baby Gone

Julia Roberts? Who at Charlie Wilson bribed the HFP? Gag.

BEST SCREENPLAY
Diablo Cody, Juno
Ethan and Joel Coen, No Country for Old Men
Christopher Hampton, Atonement
Ronald Hardwood, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
Aaron Sorkin, Charlie Wilson’s War

Ouch – Waitress got snubbed. And while I like Aaron Sorkin – seriously. What, golden globes? what is this?

4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days (Romania)
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (France/U.S.)

TV

BEST DRAMA TV SERIES
Big Love
Damages
Grey’s Anatomy
House
Mad Men
The Tudors

Ummm… Grey’s Anatomy? Over Lost??? Over freaking LOST? That’s it. I’m boycotting. You have on the one hand a completely stupid, poorly acted, ridiculous SOAP, versus a totally brilliant, imaginative, and mind blowing drama. With good acting. On one hand? George and Izzie sleep together! Gadzooks! on the other? Let’s completely switch up the traditional structure of narration for a show!

GAH!

BEST MUSICAL OR COMEDY TV SERIES
30 Rock
Californication
Entourage
Extras
Pushing Daisies

Yup. Boycott. 30 Rock and Extras are funny. Californication, I’m even ok with. But Entourage is consistently the Will and Grace of award shows – predictably nominated with no good reason. How you can nominate stuff like that, while ignoring the Office, is completely beyond me.

BEST ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES
Michael C. Hall, Dexter
Jon Hamm, Mad Men
Hugh Laurie, House
Bill Paxton, Big Love
Jonathan Rhys Meyers, The Tudors

Yeah, it’s a category I’m actually pretty ok with. Although Christopher Meloni seems destined for no love ever. Also – I’d love to see Eddie Izzard up at some point.

BEST ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES
Patricia Arquette, Medium
Glenn Close, Damages
Minnie Driver, The Riches
Edie Falco, The Sopranos
Sally Field, Brothers & Sisters
Holly Hunter, Saving Grace
Kyra Sedgwick, The Closer

Euch. Please don’t let Sally Field win.

BEST ACTOR IN A MUSICAL OR COMEDY TV SERIES
Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock
Steve Carell, The Office
David Duchovny, Californication
Ricky Gervais, Extras
Lee Pace, Pushing Daisies

BEST ACTRESS IN A MUSICAL OR COMEDY TV SERIES
Christina Applegate, Samantha Who?
America Ferrera, Ugly Betty
Tina Fey, 30 Rock
Anna Friel, Pushing Daisies
Mary-Louise Parker, Weeds

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A SERIES, MINISERIES, OR TV MOVIE
Ted Danson, Damages
Kevin Dillon, Entourage
Jeremy Piven, Entourage
Andy Serkis, Longford
William Shatner, Boston Legal
Donald Sutherland, Dirty Sexy Money

I swear to god… if Jeremy Piven wins, on top of John Krasinski and Rainn Wilson not be nominated, I might have to go hurt some members of the HFP. And William Shatner???

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A SERIES, MINISERIES, OR TV MOVIE
Rose Byrne, Damages
Rachel Griffiths, Brothers & Sisters
Katherine Heigl, Grey’s Anatomy
Samantha Morton, Longford
Anna Paquin, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee
Jaime Pressly, My Name Is Earl

Ditto Katherine Heigl and Jenna Fischer.

BEST MINISERIES OR TV MOVIE
5 Days
Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee
The Company
Longford
The State Within

BEST ACTOR IN A MINISERIES OR TV MOVIE
Adam Beach, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee
Jim Broadbent, Longford
Ernest Borgnine, A Grandpa for Christmas
Jason Isaacs, The State Within
James Nesbitt, Jekyll

BEST ACTRESS IN A MINISERIES OR TV MOVIE
Bryce Dallas Howard, As You Like It
Queen Latifah, Life Support
Debra Messing, The Starter Wife
Sissy Spacek, Pictures of Hollis Woods
Ruth Wilson, Jane Eyre

*Sigh* Such a bad year. At least a few of the categories have really clear favourites to win. I do wish that the Assasination had been up for best pic (what – 8 was too many?) But what can you do. The writers are on strike, and hollywood is all kinds of crazy.

And in all other things top 10 of 07 check this out, particularly the end.

    As Steven King puts it, over in his best of ’07 list;

    “1. LOST
Still the best. I rewatched the entire third season to make sure, and — yes — still the best. Heroes just doesn’t have its mythic grandeur. People are reaching for the stars here. And maybe beyond. Really, there’s never been anything like it.”

Sure – season 1 of Heroes was a lot of fun (and about 207+ so far) and deserved it’s nods for the first season, but Lost is seriously ingenious. Stupid GGs.
