Cork

Woke up late today, and caught the 11:30 bus into Cork (very pretty scenery – more whimberels, lots of sea birds including one very pretty one with black wings a white belly and neck stripes. Hmm – I’m trying to figure out what it is, and I think what I thought were whimberels might actually be Godwits. Still no sign of the other bird though – seriously – no good Irish birding websites??). Checked into my hostel (very large, but lots of amenities) and went walking around. Managed to get totally and completely lost, but ran into Tattoo Zoo (where I got figbash done over 3 years ago now!) and An Bodran – Kristl’s fave. pub and where I ended up my first night here. Walked out to the Cork city Jail, which was fun. They had manaquins in some of the cells, and told the stories of real inmates. It was staggering how many times some of them had been arrested – one girl about my age had been arrested something like 50 times already. It was overly dramatic at times, but cool overall. (Count Markievisz (sp?) stayed there once). Wandered around some more – the city center of cork is all shopping. I found a cute little park (Bishop’s lane?) and had Mexican for dinner (probably the closest to actual Mexican I’ve found…) Managed to find the Vanity Fair hollywood issue (I won’t even say how much its going for over here) and the next E. george (I am now officially carrying around too many books with me and I need to send some back to Dublin. Then again, I’ll be back in Dublin in a few… so maybe I should let my back carry the brunt – it might cure me of my insatiable need for books. Then again, the genetics might be too far entrenched for that…). Went to see Babel (it started raining – damn me for mentioning rain in the blog yesterday). The thought that comes to mind is “the sound and the fury…” I’m honestly staggered that it’s up for best film. For noble, ambitious, failed films, I thought Syriana was better. There were a couple of good performances (the two supporting actresses) but the movie just didn’t have any sort of… purpose? emotional connection? I’ve never been in a theater with a more restless audience, or had so many leave midway through. Nothing new out of the BAFTAs… Awww… and Ireland lost! When I was peeking in Bar windows they were up by one. Stupid French.

Colin was good enough to send this along to me: http://www.projectinsect.com/home.htm I personally like the painting of Mildred the praying Mantis.
