Overpacking and Avian Influenza

Sunday, February 26th, 2006

It’s now the 25th of February, with just 3 days left until we head out. After researching the websites of the CDC, WHO, and the Malaysia Department of Health we saw no real need to go all out with the immunizations. Since Tioman is predominatly a tourist resort for the Malay looking for a weekend to escape and also keeping in mind how the island hosts 4 star resorts the risk of infection, while still present, isn’t that worrisome to us. Dengue fever is probably our biggest worry and nothing can prevent that aside from good mosquito control. Malaria tabs are widely available and since the initial stay is only a month, well, thats that.

On that note it was just released that Avian Influenza has hit some KL suburbs. We don’t feel any real danger though seeing how many industrialized countries have been “infected” and still the virus hasn’t jumped from foul to human, yet. Don’t worry mom!
Travel insurance and packing are still waiting to be done, so thats it for now. Exciting stuff huh?

6 Days and counting…

On February 28th Jen and I will find our way to New York and hop on a plane headed for Anchorage Alaska, then to Taipei in Taiwan, and after a 3 hour layover will board yet another plane headed to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia which will arrive on March 2nd. That is over 24 hours of flying which will result in March 1st becoming non-existant to us.

After a night and day in Kuala Lumpur with Serina and Saras, our contact people through this whole process, we will head out to the east coast town of Mersing and catch a ferry out to Pulau Tioman, our home for at least the next month. We have a chalet on the beach that was provided to us by the Malaysian Nature Society, the organization that we are volunteering with, and will be teaching 40+ Malaysians the English language in the evenings.

The island has internet access depending on the weather so we should be able to update this “blog” frequently. Check out the links for more information on Malaysia, the organization, and the island.
