Norway – Svolvaer, Kabelvag (Post #25)

Hello world! Michele here….Today is Tuesday, July 12th. Thanks to everyone who gives us the updates on what is happening back there. Mike and I are currently in the Lofoton Islands in Northern Norway, above the artic circle. We are staying in a small fishing village, Kabelvag. I knew as soon as I wrote in the last blog that the weather has been fantastic on our trip that I would jinx myself and yes, that is what happened. We took a ferry from Narvik to Svolvaer, the center of the Lofoton Islands. The weather has been quite cloudy and sea was a bit choppy when we took the ferry (a little boat) to this main island of 1600 people. This was the first time we arrived someplace and did not have accomodations. We thought we would just sort of “wing it”. You can pay people at most tourist offices to call around for you to find a place to stay and that is what we did only there were no places to stay in Svolvaer but the tourist person found a cheap place for us on the neighboring island, Kabelvag so that is where we are now (a 5km walk from Svolvaer). I have included some pictures below of Svolvaer and Kabelvag.

When we got into town we immediately found a pub and got a couple of beers and dinner. Mike ordered whale meat from the 6 item menu and I had to eat some, just so I could say I have eaten that. I did not like the taste but Mike thought it was good. On Monday, we spent the day doing laundry and trying to make train and hotel reservations with little success. We did, however, buy a phone card that we used today (Tuesday) to make 4 train ride reservations since we will be moving on this Thursday. Anyway, on Monday, we decided that we would hike to the top of this mountain we saw using some unmarked trails. Well, it turned out that we got sort of lost and then the weather got bad and we finally found the trail but it was pouring rain. We decided we did not care and climbed up this steep trail. When we got to the top we could not see a thing since we were literally inside the clouds. We had fun anyway even when we walked home in the pouring rain. Today it stormed so Mike caught up on his sleep and I read some guidebooks. You can see a picture of my new hair style (hint – mike has been calling me pippi longstockings) and the other Norway photos I have taken thus far on our webshots site by clicking

    Hey Michele and Mike

Your pictures are gorgeous. You might seriously make a nice book out of them.
I would have wanted to climb that mountain myself no matter a little rain.

    Keep having fun
