Mind the gap

We arrived in the UK last Friday. I immediately started the day with an "English breakfast" at the airport - tea, a rasher of bacon (that's a big ol' slab - not the usual skinny bacon we have in the US), a sausage and some hash browns. Last night I finally got sick of English food. I had most of the favorites: fish-n-chips, steak-n-kidney pies, spotted dick (dessert), custard, lots of beer, sausages and mashed potatoes. It was the sausages, mashed potatoes and gravy that pushed me over the edge. No more meat pies or potatoes for me! I need vegetables.

Jason and I have hit most of the big sites in London: Buckingham palace, Tower of London, Parliament, Big Ben, Trafalgar Square, Whitehall, a cruise on the Thames. Prolly my favorite so far has the Tower of London. That's been Jason's favorite, too. I can't imagine what the high season must be like in London. All of the places we have been to have been overflowing with tourists. No wonder English people are great travelers. Claustrophobia. :)

For folks who haven't been to the UK, "Mind the gap" is what the subway drivers say at every station. It's a nice warning, they have lots of safety warnings here in the UK, for you to watch your step. Sometimes, it's almost half a foot from the subway car to the platform.

I'd have to agree with everyone that told me "London is very expensive". Jason and I went into a Starbucks here and handed over almost $4 for a small cup of coffee. There's also this annoying custom here where you have two prices: in and out. Meaning, if you'd like to eat inside (where it's nice and warm in October) you must pay sometimes 30% more. Bah! I could make a killing here by setting up a cafe - "Only 1 low price!". heh, heh. THOUGH, I guess this makes sense though when property prices very expensive - cafes are very small.

We leave for Egypt on Thursday!

Great reading! Brings back memories of my visits to England back in the 60's. I still remember drinking cans of warm beer that were blessed by the Queen. Back then the English drank their beer at room temperature. Enjoy!

What, no story about you trying to annoy the Buckingham palace guards :-)

Hey Cathy! I really like the pics... I'm very jealous! Yeah, London is waay expensive. Did you go to Notting Hill and SoHo? Those were my favorites when I was there. Fortunately your next stop is decidedly third world, so it will be much more economical. Be careful crossing the street in Cairo... those drivers are crazy!

Jason and I didn't stray far from the central area. We didn't go to Notting Hill, but we did do a quick walk through Soho. Soho sorta feels like San Francisco circa 1999. Lots of nice looking cafes with lower case names "eat." or "garden cafe".

This is for James - there weren't actually beefeaters at the Buckingham gates. I wonder if it's different in the winter season. Jason was real excited about maybe doing just what you suggested, but we didn't see them at the palace.
