January 29, 2004Tender Squid
Everyone always cautions you about eating street food when you travel, but I've had few bad experiences with street food in foreign countries. I've had more cases of food poisoning from greasy spoon diners in the states than from traveling in foreign countries. Anyways, Thailand is famous for its street food, and with good reason. So far, the best meals I've had have been all off the street. Last night, I had some sort of spicy basil dish with shrimp, squid, pork (I asked them not to put in chicken or egg) over rice and it was so fabulous. The seafood was so incredibly fresh, and the squid was some of the most succulent and tender squid I've ever had. I got this great guide to Thai street food with pictures that I can point at and I'm really having alot of fun with it. (Don't worry; I'm staying away from chicken and egg dishes.) Yesterday, I also tried these lovely little coconut cream crisps that were melted inside of something like a crispy belgian waffle. Inside, along with the coconut cream, they mixed things like ginger and green tea. So yummy! And only 10 baht (around 40 cents)! On a side note, some one from the Bangkok Post actually replied to me! The technology section editor wrote back to me and said he was forwarding my application to a senior editor and that I "would be hearing from them soon." Well that's better than nothing right? But I'm not going to wait around in Bangkok for them to get back to me. Saturday night, I'm taking an overnight train to Chiang Mai, a city in northern Thailand. I plan on joining a group to go jungle trekking, riding on elephants and bamboo rafting. And yes, I am working on getting pictures up! Comments
