Prep for Tibet

A list of things/thoughts from the past days
-after meeting Gary/creepy Iowan guy, ran into Kristina and BJ and we had lunch at KC's - had a turkey burger
-random guy from colorado warned us not to eat the lettuce
-the power went out for the rest of the day we ate by candlelight
-After we went shopping a little and I was sketched out by how sparse things became

Tuesday (day our proposal was due)
-hung out with Breanna the whole day
-went browsing in the morning, got slightly lost (but had fun) on a sidestreet of Thamel
-had lunch at the Dolce Vita which was so leisurely and awesome, drinking my iced tea
-went to an internet cafe and hammered out my proposal in 2 hrs
-was almost asphyixiated by fumes from the street below
-raced back in a cab to lecture (Andy Quintman)
-have been offered hash countless times
-Andy talks about GLB communities which sparks my interest and pales the idea of Bön, alas no contacts come of it to pursue the topic.

Thursday
-make a meeting with pam and manu - can't find their house, have to ask hubert - find it 20 min late
-talk to pam for a while about my proposal, Tibet, photography there, photojournalism for the Daily
-go back and stop to call mom at 2 am before I leave for Tibet - check up on everything, - call ends up costing ~$50
-bought a bunch of souvenirs, but no equipment like a down jacket for trekking
-had dinner last night at pilgrims restaurant - a cozy place with great food near dawa's house
-Breanna comes home drunk and ends up pukeing for 3 hrs from 10-1 where finally I resort to getting Ashley who helps me get her to bed. She hyperventilates for another hr and I have to hold her hand. Finally I'm like I'm done (at 2) and go to bed despite her desperate pleas to be near her

Friday
-Breanna feels sick most of the day
-we go to the post office to mail my cards but it's a holiday
-so we eat at the pilgrim's again for lunch
-hop a cab to Thamel
-shop some more
-download my pics to a cd while she checks her e-mail after
-we have dinner at a japanese restaurant which was fair, after
-we high-tailed it to shona's to buy equipment before it closed
-Back at Dawa's we totally repack everything and moved it into the cabinets until 1am

Saturday
-got up at like 5:30am, got on the bus to fly to Lhasa
-air china randomly decided to delay the flight by 3 hrs
-Annie and I had the suckiest seats ever - no window in an exit row - the stewardess wouldn't reseat me so I said don't expect me to do anything in an emergency
-and she never got me a sprite

deboarding in Gonkar Int'l Airport (AKA Lhasa)

-Pam always says the flights are going to take 4 hrs, so what I've come to interpret that as the normal time X 4
-we got in smoothly, Tenzin went on to Chengdu and successfully got a visa for the TAR - so she's coming today
-bus ride was two hours on a wonderfully smooth road and amazing landscape

-lhasa is more devleoped and sinocized than I thought it would be
-foreign influence is everywhere
-it is freaking freezing here I'd guess 40s if you're lucky - the sun is a lot warmer
