Ivory Tower

Yesterday afternoon I and a few others went on a bus tour of Delhi - we visited a mosque, saw the walls of the 7 ancient cities that used to exist, one of which was delhi - now old delhi. India was hundreds if not thousands of kingdoms until the 1330s when the muslims invaded - that lasted until the 1660s when Britain defeated the last of the forts now in Delhi. Britain united the leaders and created a single capital city for all the different kingdoms. They also began planning their own section of town, new delhi. Thus new delhi is much more spacious, green and very european feeling with roundabouts and large houses. The parliament and palace are also there where the president now lives. We saw Ghandi's memorial and mosoleum which was beautiful. It rained most of the time and we were all exhausted from our trip.

Today we went to the airport and flew on Indian Airlines to Kathmandu. Though the flight was only an hour long, we were served a full lunch! It was pretty cloudy all the way to Kathmandu but when we got out it was sunny and almost as hot as Delhi - same lattitude, higher altitude and therefore less humidity. We took a bus to the nice Dawa's guesthouse; we were shown around thamel, the hippie tourist district, and then had dinner there. Kathmandu is so much more polluted than Dharamsala or even Delhi ever was. We had dinner at an extremely beautiful and tasty, though expensive thai restaurant.
