Hvar Island

I am on Hvar Island, the island that is said to receive more sunshine than any place in Europe... something like 3000 hours of it annually.
Guess what? It's freakin' raining!
It is also Sunday, and it's low season... so all the sightseeing is closed, all the markets are closed, all the museums, all the monasteries. There is nothing to do but sit in my little apartment and read. Actually, I can't really complain, life could be worse. :)
It is so weird how EVERYTHING shuts down on Sundays... even in the big cities. The supermarkets are not even open on Sundays. Nothing is open on Sundays except the a few cafe bars and (if you are lucky) a restaurant or two. It's quite frustrating.
Hvar Island is beautiful, despite the weather. On the ferry over yesterday from Split we were approached by an energetic older Croatian woman offering zimmer (private accomodation). I am always a bit skeptical until I actually see the room, so not having said "yes", she spent the ENTIRE two-hour ferry ride repeating herself (in broken English) over and over and over again, "Beds wit bathroom, shower, BIG kitchen wit gas.... nema problema!" (Nema problema is "No problem" in Croatian) "I have my man pick us up."
When we got to the island, her "man" (husband) was waiting in a tiny little mini car, in which he drove like a bat out of hell (passing people around blind corners) to get to the apartment. I'm talking like 80 km per hour on the windy, twisty roads. All the while the Croatian woman kept looking back at us and (maybe seeing the horror on my face) saying, "Nema problema!"
Once we actually made it, I marvelled at the nice big bedrooms and kitchen. I have a great view, can see the water from my balcony. It's a steep climb downhill to Old Hvar Town and a steep climb downhill to the beach. This place is a bit sleepy compared to Split, but wonderfully relaxing. It would be perfect if it just quit raining, for goodness sakes!

FUNNY! I see a ton of these all the time and I must start writing them down because they provide loads of entertainment for me.

ON A DRINK MENU AT A CAFE HERE ON HVAR ISLAND:
Long Island Iced Tea
vodka, tequila, rum, gin, triple secretary

Hee, hee!
