Zagreb

Day 32

Wow! Zagreb rocks! This place is freaking cool.
We actually made here last night by about 11 pm and found a place to stay. It was crappy and rainy, but today is much, much different.

This morning, I had the BEST crissoint and cup of coffee I have ever had (of course, I was reminded that I have not been to Paris, but still). After breakfast I found the colorful, bustling flower and vegetable market, where I bought roasted hazelnuts, awed at the dried herbs, took pictures of the beautifully displayed red and green wine grapes. THEN, I wandered into an indoor meat market and, much to my horror and dismay, saw the most gruesome display of butchery imaginable. Pigs halved down the center longwise, just hanging there with skin still on (it reminded me of the torture museum in Cesky Krumlov), lambs that were basically "skinned" with their eyeballs still in (it reminded me of a scene from the original Predator movie), and (the worst) an intact pig's head severed just behind the ears and sitting, seemingly smiling, on top of all the rest of it's own severed body parts. Ew.
THEN I tried to find the freaking youth hostel. There are only two here in Zagreb (the capital city of Croatia). Can you say untapped market? It is a ways out of town, but I finally found it and it is GREAT. Laundry (although I had to hang it up to dry outside), Internet access, comfortable beds, a kitchen. What more could a girl ask for?

This city is beautiful. There are so many parks and fountains and men playing accordian on the side of the road. There are outdoor cafes, museums, rolling hills, gothic churches. I cannot wait to see the rest of Croatia. Especially some of the 6000 km of coastline.

Went out with some crazy Swedish girls and had a really good time.
