September 21, 2004Puno
Arrived in Puno around 11.00PM, the ride from Ariquipa to Puno was not bad. Although the bus was supposed to leave at 3.30PM and it actually left at 4.30PM. Basically bus company kept looking for few more customers. If I am in Peru, I would certainly avoid bus company Destino. Go with company called First Class or Omanio. On 16th Sept morning, went to Museo De Yumuri. This was a Iron hulled ship that was sent from UK in pieces and the assembled it in Puno. The parts arrived in Arica (now in Chile), then went to Tacna by train then they took them up 15,000ft to Puno by mules. It took 6 years to assemble this ship, now that patience. The boat has many original things compass, sextant, maps. In the afternoon took a trip to Sillustani. The colla nobles were burried in the towers called chullpas here, some of them are 12 meters tall. What is interesting is similar to Pyramids they also burried their servants, wife of dead person and thing he would need in other world(!). However all the chullpas were raided long ago so you can not see any of mummies. Its worth visiting place if you got time to kill in Ariquipa, but I would not go out of my way to visit this place. In the evening I had best trout I have ever had, if you do go to Puno do try the fish at Lago De Flores on Lima Ave. Wine & Fish total was 25 soles. Comments
