Reading List

The books I have read so far on my RTW.

1. Mark Twain : The Innocents Abroad.
The initial part describing Europe was very interesting. Although I was amazed at Mark Twain´s ignorent description of Istanbul -- the market, mosques, people in Istanbul. I thought his description of Istanbul was disgusting.

2. Tony Cohan: On Mexican Time: A New Life in San Miguel
Interesting book. Certainly has very ¨romantic¨description of rural Mexico. Although if life was so wonderful in Mexico, thousands of them would not try to reach America, every day. The fact is simple if you manage to get to a country where you are part of 1% of rich people, where you do not have to work 10-12 hours a day any country in the world will look very romantic. Although this book is worth reading.

3. A Brief History of Argentina by Felix Luna
Purchased this book in Buenos Aires. This book has very European history of Argentina. Even then the author does not discuss what happened to all the native people in Argentina, what happened to slaves in Argentina. Very brief description of Peron era. I would certainly not recommend this book.

4. Hillary Rodham Clinton : Living History
I am hard code anti-republican, so there is no way I was not going to like this book. However if you are republican or democrat, Hillary comes across as very intelligent woman through this book, certainly it would be good for America if she runs for President and wins in 2008 !!

5. Barry Boyce A Traveler's Guide to the Galapagos Islands.
Purchased at Port Ayoura. Worth reading, if you are going to spend $550 on trip to Galapagos this is worth reading.

6. Inca-Cola. A Traveller's Tale of Peru. Matthew Paris
Book describes journey through Peru in 1990, Peru has changed a lot since then. However I found the book very interesting read.

7. A Passion to Win -- by Sumner Redstone
A sort of autobiography of Sumner Redstone. Certainly its a one sided story of Viacom. However the book does contain some interesting discussion about complex take over, negotation tips. Worth reading on a long flight!!

8. Are You Experienced? by William Sutcliffe
Interesting book about British lad travelling to India. Certainly worth reading.

9. Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies by Jared Diamond.

Absolutely worth reading if you are going to travel around the world, at times the book gets far too technical and throws out too much data at you. But as you travel outback of Australia in 50C you will "get it" that aboriginal people are not of less intelligence, nature never provided them chance to develop sustained agriculture, thus advance their technology, as it was advanced in Europe and Asia... But at the same time reading stories of early European explores it makes it clear, aboriginal people in Aus were far more adopt at living with the nature than technologically advanced Europeans (at least in early days).

10. Daughter of Persia : A Woman's Journey From Her Father's Harem Through the Islamic Revolution by Sattareh Farman Farmaian, Dona Munker
Interesting reading if you are interested in history of Iran.

11. Wheelbarrow Across the Sahara -- Geoffrey Howard
A story of guy who walked across Sahara, taking all his food, water in a wheelbarrow. Certainly puts trek (in a 4x4, with GPS) across Sahara on my to do list.

12. Marching Powder : A True Story of Friendship, Cocaine, and South America's Strangest Jail by Thomas McFadden, Rusty Young.
Its a very interesting story about San Pedro prison in La Paz. I wish I had read this book before visiting Bolivia, I would have certainly made it a point to visit this prison, I wonder if the prison tours still occur. If anyone is travelling to La Paz/Bolivia certainly read it.

13. Raw Spirit - In Search of Perfect Dram by Iain Banks
This is a book about Iain Banks search for perfect whiskey in Scotland. I had no idea that one could describe single malt having flavours like fruity, nutty like wine. This book would certainly make you put Scotland on your list of countries to visit.

14. Hardship Posting - True Tales of Expat Misadventure in Asia Vol. 3
There are three volumes of Hardship posting books. This is very light and funny reading. It would be interesting to find out what percent of "expat" move to Asia for easy sEx. You can read some of the stories online at
here

15. India - India: A Million Mutinies Now by V.S. Naipaul

I must say this is THE BEST book I have read. No wonder Naipaul got Nobel prize for literature. If you are going to travel in India its a must read book, IMO. My only wish is Naipaul visits India in 2010 and writes book about India from 1994 to 2010 as things have changed so much in last 20 years...
