Amman, Jerash & Ajlun

Crossed over from Israel into Jordan. Getting visa and security check was a breeze, compared to Israel of course. After you are finished with visa, there is taxi stand with fixed prices to Amman. It took 21JD for three hour ride to Amman. I had met a British woman that works for Reauters at the border crossing and we decided to split the cab ride to Amman.

The ride itself was nice, I was surprised to see how green the surroundings were.

After checking into Select Hotel near downtown Amman, took a 10 minute walk over to downtown Amman. Noticed there were very few tourists and none of the shopkeepers bothered tourists with the usual common of visit my shop just to look etc. Checked out The Roman Theater, in the heart of downtown. Purchased the airline ticket for return journey to home. It being the St Patty's day went over to Irish Pub. People started coming in after about 10.00PM. Met a team sales team of Dell, there were lot of American kids. Found out that lot of American kids come to Amman, Jordan to complete one semester study of Arabic and Middle East and there is large American/Brit community in Amman. Business of shipping stuff to Iraq is booming and Amman is becoming center for doing that business. Noticed many signs all over Amman for a trade show called 'Rebuild Iraq' .

Next day took a mini-bus to town of Jerash. Jerash is certainly worth visiting and spending at least 1/2 a morning. After you are finished with Jerash you can take a either a mini-bus or flag down one of the Toyota 4x4 with crew cab and visit Ajlun fort. It should take 1JD. The fort itself is not very impressive but you get really nice view of the Jordan valley.

When I went it was Friday so there were lot of local Jordanian families visiting this place. Again not many tourists at this place. If you do visit this place by minibus or Toyota taxi, its hard to get taxi back to the town of Ajlun, so you have to walk back down about 3Km.

If you do stay in Amman at select hotel, about 5 min walk from the hotel there is place that sells the most amazing Shawarma, ask at the hotel. Its not the standard Shawarma you get in Jordan but chicken/beef has some nice spices on it.
