Un poco mas perspectiva de Espana
My roomate continues to be great, Vasi and I get along very well and offer each other moral
support. We went on a 4 day vacation (from this vacation) down south to Malaga
with 3 other friends. Vasi and I help each other out: when I started stumbling around lying to two nice and good looking, but
overly interested Spaniards/Moroccons, she came to my rescue to finish my
sentence about how we had a plane to catch.
Anyway, that trip was great. Went
to Picasso museum, flaminco show and a lot of beach. Normally I hate museums, but i really like Picasso´s style, and
his work is so diverse. The other weekened we went to Lisbon, portugal, which was kind of drab (and one
of my friends was robbed at knife point, for her iPod). But, the cool thing was that we heard
some nice portuguese music and I bought a CD from a moving street musician.
Normally I´m here in Salamanca, 4 hours of class in the mornings, then walk or
run around the park, lunch at 3, siesta, homework, movies, coconut icecream. or
“going out” (the club scene here is absolutely crazy, often not starting until
after 1, it´s fun to dance, and there is a live, free Brasilian band which I
like a lot. In all seriousness this life is a bit hard for me to take because
it seems too wasteful, but I figure if I can learn to relax and be content when
I am not busy, the skill will help me when I actually have more important
things to do.
Okay, here´s the critique: the garbage in the streets is proportional with the
great number of state-employed garbage picker uppers who drive around with
these crazy vacuum suckers or pick up candy wrappers by hand. And of course,
who wouldn´t throw a Dorito wrapper on the street and provide employment? The
problam comes near the otherwise beautiful river, where no one picks up the
trash that floats down in to the reeds and collects in a tragic commons.
To end on an upnote, I´ve been inspired by some very sweet people. For his
birthday our professor took all his students out for wine and tappas (snacks) and
wouldn´t dare let us pay. Also, the other day I told a store owner that I liked
the music he had in the background, wanting to purchase it. He said it wasn´t
for sale, but I should come back the next day. He then gave me 4 hours of
PUtamayo world music which he burned from his own collection. It was very
spontaneous and heartfelt.
