Days 69-70: Here There Be Dragons (Big Ones This Time!)

May 21st, 2005

It’s not every day you get a few feet from something that would be happy to eat you.

Days 62-68: Bladders of Steel

May 21st, 2005

Sorry for the delay in blog posts. We actually stopped in two towns “with internet access” on Flores. The first had been broken for over a year, and the second was at least 3 months in disrepair. Flores is a bit remote – only 2-3 towns with banks, and not a single franchise (no McDonalds, and of course they don’t need Starbucks). It took us 22.5 hours on buses/cars to travel the 423km from Maumere to Labuanbajo. That’s averaging about 13 mph…..

Days 59-62: Waiterang, Flores

May 12th, 2005

We decided to get off the beaten tourist track and so we flew to Maumere on the island of Flores and headed to the village of Waiterang. We had a stopover in Waingapu on Pulau Sumba with cows grazing along the runway. The hotels are bamboo huts and the electricity is only on from 6pm to 6am. It made for a nice escape.

Days 55-58: Bali

May 8th, 2005

Halo Mister! Flew to the island of Bali, Indonesia a few days ago and headed north to the string of small villages called Lovina (which we’re told means Love Indonesia). The place must have had less than a dozen tourists but a gaggle of hotels and restaurants. What a terrific country this is!

Not much to report from the past few days. Spent most of it in Coffs Harbor and the surrounding national parks. Still haven’t found a platypus…..

Days 47-48: Didgeridoo

April 29th, 2005

We spent a couple of days in Byron Bay… which is hippie central – kind of like a small Berkeley on the beach. Nice relaxed, healthy vibe. Everyone is pregnant. Upon our first arrival at the beach we were both immediately peed on by a seagull flying overhead.

Day 46: Here There Be Dragons

April 27th, 2005

We came to Surfers Paradise and immediately left the beach. We headed to Lamington National Park which is on the World Heritage list. And, no, it is not named after the spongy teacakes – it is named after a former Queensland governor who came to the park just after it was founded to sportingly shoot koalas.

Days 43-45: Hangin’ Loose in Noosa

April 27th, 2005

Noosa is a fairly posh resort town that also has some nice surfing. So you get lots of people wearing white pants and shirts (you know the type) rubbing elbows with sandy dudes carrying surfboards to the point. We spent the Anzac Day (similar to our Memorial Day) weekend there with a few hundred Harley Davidson fans.

Days 41-42: Exfoliating

April 24th, 2005

We had written off Fraser Island – not easy for go-it-alone type folks in our budget range, no four-wheel drive experience, and so it would cost a bit. But to a person, everyone we met said it had to be done. They all said it is the top site on the East coast of Australia and that it was like nowhere else in the world. With recommendations like that, we forked over the cash and booked a two day tour.
