Days 9-11: Hanz and Franz
Well actually, we visited the Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers. Hanz was just an Austrian guy in our tour group. Yep, we booked a tour so we could walk on the ice…
It was a small group (8 of us) and we had our first experience using crampons. Well, they were more like crampon-lite since they were only a few inches square, but they kept us from slipping to our death (a tourist died on the Franz Josef the day before). It was a gorgeous day.
Our group on the the Fox Glacier.
Icy blue death awaits: a blue ice crevasse.
Kel eyes Fox.
The Franz Josef Glacier from top-to-bottom. It’s shrank a bit from it’s hayday in the last iceage.
Franz Josef was quite large and dirty, and we decided to book it out of there after watching a huge rock come rolling down the mountain (below the paying tour groups but above the free viewing zone).

The eulogy for the poor tourist who died the day before was touching, really. I thought your heckling him in the comments to the photos was an especially nice touch…bad karma…
