Raro Day II

The road in Rarotonga is basically, well, just one road and it goes around the perimeter of the island. It takes about 40 minutes to drive around the whole thing. Lots of people ride motorbikes.

We rode the motorbike to opposite the Fruits of Rarotonga store, where there is supposed to be great snorkeling. It was still overcast so Jim went in and said the visibility wasn’t great. However, when I was standing there I saw like 30 silver fish jump out of the water at the same time in the distance. That was cool.

Crabs everywhere!

Then we went to the store and got a big fresh tuna steak for $8 NZ, which is about $5 US. $5 for a big package of fresh tuna!! Score!

We went to town and booked a flight and hotel to another island called Aitutaki for the next day. It is the second most popular island in the Cooks and is supposed to be more beautiful and less touristy. It’s sometimes considered one of the most beautiful islands in the Pacific.

We got an ice cream cone, 1 scoop of coconut for Jim and 1 scoop of cookies & cream for me. Then I got a cool flowered shirt for cheap and some neat coconut oil soaps.

At night there wasn’t much to do, so we played cards and got a really fuzzy station on the clock radio.

I also got coconut oil for my hair, and I only put a few drops in after my shower and my hair looked SO greasy I had to wash it again!! Duh!

So… what is it like here? There are coconuts everywhere, along the street. You don’t see anyone who is poor or starving. In fact, a lot of the people are quite large. I guess it is impossible to be hungry when you can pick up a coconut off the street or anywhere. The people are, yes, very friendly and say Hello a lot.

That night we took a bus to go to some of the bars since it was Friday night. I had the most disgusting beer of my life, Cooks Lager. It was VERY gross and even smelled gross.

We’d heard a lot about the nightlife on Fridays but it wasn’t that exciting. I do remember going to one bar and some people were dancing to modern hip-hop music. The girls were fantastic dancers, no matter what they did. I was jealous.
