Getting ready for long term travel

Friday, September 28th, 2007

Getting ready for a trip like this has taken some serious planning. Of course, I can’t plan for everything-nor would I want to!
The main things I’ve been doing are:

1. Planning my finances. Arranging for a friend to manage my money/bank account/bills while I am away. Talking to bank, credit card companies, etc about the length of my trip and working them to be flexible about misc. charges being reversed while I am overseas.

2. Filling out applications online, contacting organizations I would like to volunteer for along the way.

3. Confirming details and setting up airport/bus station pickups with organizations I have already committed to.

4. Packing up my possessions that I want to keep to put into storage.

5. Getting vaccinations,presciptions,letter of good health,etc.

6. More research on destinations-trying to have a loosely planned idea of what I would like to do and see in Central America.(I’ll work on the rest later).

7. Reserving accomodation at hostels for the first few stops.

8. Refining the packing list!

9. Trying to make time between working and everything else to see family and friends, say goodbye.

My Very First Post

Hi, and welcome to my travel blog about my solo adventure around the world.

This blog will talk about everything from my packing list to where I’m going and what I’m doing.

My goal is to use this blog to communicate with friends, family, and people I meet along the way-but also to serve as a active journal of my travels.

It’s somewhat difficult to write the very first entry,as I have the sense that I will read it later and wish I said things differently,or better-but here goes. I’m going to try to keep the language simple and entertaining, and not worry too much about the words themselves.

So, why around the world? [read on]

The journey begins…
