Hostel Living

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008

I’ve been living out of a hostel the last couple of days while waiting to change up a living situation, and I’d almost forgotten how easy to meet people in one.  There have been a parade of unique folk coming through here in the last week, and I’ve gone out with a couple of them and had a great time.

Not only were they great people to talk to, but they had tons of information about travelling about South America, something that I haven’t had a lot of experience with yet.  Now I’ve got a whole list of places I wouldn’t of though of on my own to make stops in on my own travels!  Hostels are legit.

Vacation time?

Friday, December 5th, 2008

Over the last couple of weeks I’ve been deciding where exactly I’d like to spend my Christmas break, and I’ve settled on Brazil now.  I’m going to go up to Iguazu for a couple of days, and then on to Florianopolis to try and learn how to surf.  Super excited!

I’m a big snowboarder so I’ve never had the chance to learn how to surf, and Florianopolis is supposed to offer all sorts of options for people wanting to learn.  Think I’ll be able to get up within a week?  I guess we’ll see!

Reading Material

I've found a real nice used English bookstore in San Telmo, so I'm real happy about having some new books to polish off.  Even if they're throwaway Clancy novels, it's still nice to spend an afternoon reading in a plaza.  ... [Continue reading this entry]

Plaza Dorrego

Spent a relaxing afternoon in San Telmo today, watching the tourists watch the tango dancers in Plaza Dorrego.  It's one of the few open squares in Buenos Aires, and it's a real nice spot to sit and relax during the ... [Continue reading this entry]

Off to a New Apartment!

Well, my love affair with Palermo officially ends tomorrow.  The apartment I've been in for the last two months is being replaced by a new spot in San Telmo.  New barrio, new bars, new experiences!  I want to try and ... [Continue reading this entry]

TOMS Shoes

Thursday, November 27th, 2008
Stumbled across a really great charity today, TOMS Shoes.  These guys will donate one pair of shoes for every pair someone purchases.  Their shoes are based off of the Argentine style shoe called an Alpargate, and they're super ... [Continue reading this entry]

Twitter

Twitter is such a cool service for keeping in touch, I love it for sending micro-updates to friends and family.  From my cell phone it lets me send quick "tweets" to anyone that is following me, letting me keep in ... [Continue reading this entry]

Depreciation = Travel!

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008
With currencies depreciating all over South America, there is no better time to travel than now!  Brazil, Peru, and Chile have currencies that have all fell almost 30% against the USD, and Argentina has fallen 10% itself.  This is a ... [Continue reading this entry]

Zapatos

Monday, November 24th, 2008
While running this week I noticed something problematic: I'm wearing a hole into the heel of my right shoe.  This is no good, because I can't afford a gym membership down here so I'm almost always running or playing soccer.  ... [Continue reading this entry]

Don’t Burn Your Fingers Off!

Friday, November 21st, 2008
After toasting all the fingers on my right hand in a boneheaded move last night, I was reminded of the necessity of a first aid kit.  Blisters all over your fingers after the pharmacies have all closed is no fun.  ... [Continue reading this entry]
