About me

Here I am…a more determined and focused world traveler than ever before.

As I prepare myself to return to the road again, my goal is both daunting and exhilirating at the same time:  to transform my travels into my life – to make it my job, to make it my continuing education, to fulfill my dreams and to allow me to share them with others.

My earlier travels in life were splendid, spent as a tourist (Europe & Australia), a backpacker (Asia & South America), a seeker of spirituality (India) and a craver of danger (Pakistan tribal areas and Afghanistan) interspersed with dozens of other adventures, both typical and unique.

But then I put the backpack in the storage room, deciding to give the normal life a try, sort of.  I know that working onboard major cruise ships as a Tour Manager for four years is definitely not most people’s idea of a normal life, but sleeping in the same cabin each night and working in the same office every day, albeit a floating one, was certainly a change in lifestyle for me.   I did visit dozens of countries and met hundreds of fascinating people along the way, but in the end, instead of preparing me to ‘settle down’, this ‘ship life’ seemed to uncover that inner urge to be on the road once again.

And so I am following that voice and heading back to India to begin the newest stage of my life.  To be honest, I have no idea where the path will lead beyond landing at the Indira Gandhi airport on April 13th, 2008; all I do know is that I will arrive with a completely open mind, ready to write about the path that unfolds before me.  I am confident that this is the correct decision and that all of these years of roadrunning prior to this trip could not possibly have been in vain.

    Derek,

I am thrilled to read what you are doing.
I had found your blog about the “ear digging” and now really glad to read about this adventure.
In December, I am hoping to go to India with OAT for three weeks. As soon as I have any information, and assuming that you are still there, I would love to see you and spend some time, off the beaten path, with you.

    Derek,

What can I say ol buddy!!! I really enjoy reading about your time there in India. I really wish that I could have done what you did, just get up and go. I so envy your life and the way you live it. It definitely gives me something to dream about and someday wish that I too can just go and travel, see the world, meet new people, learn about new cultures and just live. I cant wait to hear about your next adventure!!! Take care
    Suki
