Eveline and I spent Sunday morning at the Art Gallery of Western Australia. Current exhibitions included Year 12 students that were very talented and impressive. Many were Japanese exchange/international students and all the art was gorgeous. We only spent about an hour in the gallery, the permanent collection having not been something that Eveline and I were overly impressed with. Afterwards, we headed to the Swan Bells for a look inside. The many large bells inside are only rung once a day. Some of the bells have been in exsistence sine before the 1300s and have been used to mark special occasions in the UK in the Church of St Martin-in-the-Fields until 1988 where they were moved to their current location.
I love weekend markets. There’s a weekend market next door to the apartment complex that I visit every weekend. It’s at least 4 times larger than the Farmer’s Market in Old Strathcona and it’s open all year round with food stalls, produce, jewellery, crafts and fashions. I’ve been going to this bulk food place to buy all our morning cereal, pasta, rice, etc. I like the feel of the busy market with it’s live music and everyone enjoying their shopping. The only drawback is actually purchasing produce. The stalls are so busy that it’s normal to have 10 people lining up to pay at every single counter. And since it’s a produce stall, almost everything requires weighing so it’s quite slow.
Oh, and they are very conscious about their shopping bags. Everyone always brings cloth shopping bags to put their purchases in. It’s great to see. I remember when Canada used to try and sell those recyclable shopping bags but it never seemed to take off. Maybe Australia had a larger campaign budget… I personally have got a special edition Sesame Street Elmo one!
