I started volunteering tonight for the Sally Ann’s Kettle campaign. You recognize the people, they’ve got vests and jingle some bells when you donate money to the kettle. Sometimes candy canes, stickers and calendars are handed out when you donate. I saw in the Edmonton Journal Engage section about all the different things you can volunteer for and they were shorthanded and I thought it couldn’t be too hard so why don’t I put in a few shifts. It ends before Christmas so it’s not long term either.
96% of funds go direct to the programs (ie. very little goes to admin costs). A shift is only 3 hours and they have someone come check on you and give you breaks. You can read a book, knit or do some other kind of thing while working your vigil. For me it was either help out or sit at home watching tv so might as well do something worthy, eh?
You guys should consider it too! They need more people! The supervisor said she is donating her time 6 days a week sometimes because they don’t have enough people to cover the breaks.
