Elk Island National Park

Did you know that 2007 was the Canadian year of the Bison? That’s what we discovered on our way into the Elk Island National park on Saturday. It’s only about 45 minutes northeast of the city. 28C too! We picnicked in the shade by the large lake and afterwards walked along a floating boardwalk where we watched Damsel and Dragonflies go about their business, which was mainly getting it on… Found a string of eggs in the water. Don’t know what animal lays eggs in a long string like black pearls rather than in a clumps… Anybody got a clue?

Got eaten by mosquitos during our hike on the Beaver Trail. Chosen for it’s potential for viewing bison and the beaver house, it was very buggy and we were driven back by them after only 22 minutes into the trail. That’s ok though, we needed get Winnie back into town for her year end concert anyways. (that’s our excuse) We didn’t see bison although we did see evidence that they were around. (Watch out for the bison patties!)

Needless to say, a slushie stop was mandatory on the way back into town.

ps. buffalo is the wrong terminology. Bison are only found in N. America.
