American spelling gets me angry

I’m reading this series of books by Patricia Cornwall. It’s the Kay Scarpetta series about a Medical Examiner and her cases. It’s pretty good. I discovered her in Australia. The only problem is that the current book I’m reading spells manequin the phonetic way (which I think is the American way) and it looks so gross!!! MANIKIN. ew! who does that? Why can’t Americans spell properly. Every time I see the word manikin I have a strong desire to take my pen, scratch it out and spell it correctly only that would ruin the book. (it’s got manikin in there at least 5 times and i’m only 1/2 way through)

This doesn’t happen with all words that I see Americanized. I am used to seeing zeds instead of s in words like customized, etc. I think part of my acceptance with zeds is because it’s been taught to me in school since about grade 4. I remember being proud of my spelling prowess in Grade 3 and being confused in grade 4 when the same words looked different.

Some words still look wrong to me. I don’t like the look of Traveler. It should be 2 Ls!
