GUA

After 6,000 miles and nearly 24 hours on the move, the last thing we needed was hassle at Guatemala City International Airport. Would it be sweet and short, or more like our experience at Cancun in Mexico a couple of years ago when we began to think we’d be checking in to return home before we’d even left the airport??!

DFW

December 18th, 2005

Having exited the belly of the plane at Dallas, we were particularly looking forward to spending time transitting this airport towards Guatemala. Not! Our anticipation was based on last year’s experiences of the States and their approach to ‘civility’ in matters of border control. First stop the immigration hall. Oh joy!!

Okay, here we go. It’s likely that to make any sense of the contradictions found in passing between borders you’ll need to read all entries in this category. And of course, until they come along, we don’t know what we’ll find! But we do know that we’ve got a fair few border crossings coming up on this trip, from the straighforward (or at least we’d like to think so!) to the more esoteric, such as crossing from Mexico back into Guatemala by river boat.

But first up it’s good ole Gatwick and our flight to the States.

Are you from Santiago?

December 17th, 2005

But the journey wasn´t over quite yet. We had to get across Lake Atitlan to Santiago de Atitlan where we planned to stay for two nights. And despite the fact that it was now early afternoon and we´d been advised to travel early to avoid a choppy crossing, we simply had to stop, catch our breath and get some food down our necks.

Panajachel – a few hours late

December 17th, 2005

Frantic reading of the guide book suggested that we would make it to Panajachel eventually. Would it be today – who knows?

Do you know the way to Panajachel?

December 17th, 2005

Being the seasoned travellers that we are now, getting to Panajachel was going to be a doddle. Two buses and a couple of hours and we’d be there. Yeah right….

Intro

December 17th, 2005

Not everything seems as joined up as we’re led to believe when it comes to passport control matters, immigration, and of course, the delightful experience of passing through security. And that’s only on the Western side of our experiences! When it comes to the more prosaic ‘foreign’ experiences we’ve encountered…..well, that’s an entirely different matter, but even so, we think there’s lessons to be learned from those states less paranoid about national security than our own.

This category aims to observe the differences that exist at border control when passing from one country to another, and even within the same country!

As a little taster, we wrote once upon a time about our flight from Miami, where, having endured endless hours of irrelevant beauracracy, we promptly sat on a plane and were provided not only with glasses (rather than plastic) from which to drink from, but also stainless steel knives. So, what happened to the threat one could pose to security on this occasion???!

The world is full of contradictions, but sometimes these contradictions are just too extreme to simply shrug your shoulders and let it all wash over you. So in this category, you’ll find the worst of contradictions exposed, while all the time we’re told we’re under threat and must simply conform to officialdom as the “war against terror” gathers pace. And no doubt we’ll also be able to tell you about some of the more pragmatic approaches other countries take to protecting their nationhoods.

Antigua *16 Dec 05

December 16th, 2005

We headed towards the main square, which in all honesty was very similar to all the other squares we’ve seen throughout central and south America. The only difference was that it’s a bit quieter here than other places and nuisances such as begging and street selling didn’t appear to be as rife. Typically, the whole place appeared immaculately clean.

Escaping Guatemala City 16Dec05

We were still dead tired after our journey half way across the world, so escaping Guatemala City was easy – we took a cab to Antigua!!!

Waking where?

December 16th, 2005

It´s dark, very dark. The warmth of the bed covers encourages eyes to be closed. Breath against my skin tells me I´m not alone. The noise of a huge mosquito begins to pearce the stillness. An Atari Space Invaders arcade game kicks into life. The metallic sound of a tranny radio tuned badly and turned up far too loud seems a million miles away and yet beside my head. And it´s still dark. Or is it?
