Ballina, Australia: Finally on Terra Firma

Tuesday, December 26th, 2006

Airport ShuttleWe’re finally in Ballina, our final flight destination for this leg of the trip. We’re in Ballina, my clothes are over the Pacific and Elizabeth’s stuff is still in Sydney. Unlike my gear, her’s made the trans-pacific flight okay. But when we boarded our SECOND flight to Ballina (the first plane having broke down while we were on the tarmac) our flight was overweight. Probably my fault carrying all the extra kilograms of Christmas cookies in my belly. So her bag was left behind to be delivered on a later flight.

We then missed the infrequent shuttle to Byron Bay and had to wait an hour for the next one. But FINALLY we have arrived. You have to love the “Always There for You” slogan the shuttle company uses. Especially when noone was even at the counter.

Highlight of the day: When the pilot left the cabin to use the john. You should have seen the look on our faces.

The Wonderful World of Oz

Tuesday, December 26th, 2006

We’ve arrived! Despite lost luggage (mine in Sydney, Carrie’s in LA), a plane malfunction, and a missed bus ride, we finally made it to Byron Bay around 1:30pm today. The flight from LAX to Sydney was delightful, as Carrie and I were allowed to move to the Economy Plus cabin where we lounged on three seats a piece. Not quite a plush bed, but more pleasant than spending 13 hours sitting upright. The bus ride from Ballina to Byron offered our first view of the lush countryside, abundant with brightly colored wildflowers and evergreens so perfect in shape they actually resemble fake Christmas trees. No Kangaroo sightings yet, alas. So now, after grabbing a couple traditional meat pies for lunch and taking a quick tour of Main Beach Byron, we are headed back to the Dolphins Motel to schedule our surfing lessons. We hope to hit the beach first thing tomorrow! Merry Christmas from Oz – Elizabeth
