Suzdal

Ticket issues settled, I got the hell out of Moscow. I evacuated to the small town of Suzdal. This is the “postcard” town of the famous Golden Ring of historically interesting towns that encircle Moscow. If I’m ever back in the area, this is where I’ll spend my time. I passed through Vladimir and changed buses for Suzdal. We drove through rolling farmland until reaching the town. It took a while to get settled (in the Hobbit Hotel!) and then I wandered.

It was an exercise in overload, with beautiful churches on every corner, a quaint Kremlin, and a tiny main drag of shops. The town has a massive stray cat population and I made friends with a few of them. The day passed idly, as I wandered all over town examining both the churches and the detailed reliefs that rimmed the local houses. I highly recommend peaceful Suzdal. Because it’s on the radar of many tourists, it’s not the most authentic rendition of the Russian countryside town, but it might be the prettiest.
