“What the HELL were we thinking!?”
That is the question we kept asking ourselves all weekend long. What were we thinking signing up for a weekend excursion to Jervis Bay! Where is Jervis Bay? I didn’t know before I signed up for the trip, but I know now. The supposed “Jewel of the South Coast” (as the brochure so proudly proclaimed), was a lot of nothingness and certainly out in boonieville Australia!
To make a long story short, it was easily the most dissappointing, boring weekend I have had in Australia (yes, not everything here is always so rosy)! But I guess in three months of being here, to have one mundane weekend isn’t so terrible. To better explain:
We left early saturday morning, drove 2 1/2 hours, stopped at a po-dunk Emu farm for 20 minutes, then stopped in another really small town for some lunch before the boat that was supposed to take us on our “Dolphin Cruise” was 1 1/2 late and by that point, no one felt like a Dolphin Cruise. Especially after sailing the Great Barrier Reef and seeing dolphins and many other aquatic beings, it was VERY anti-climactic. Then, we were bussed off to our hostel, which we took a 20 minute gravel road to get to, and upon pulling up, there was no resturaunt, no bar, no nothing but the hostel and woods for miles and miles. We did have a nice cook out (compliments of our tour guides) where I did get to try kangaroo (which was GREAT! tasted like steak!) But after that, there was nothing to do, so I went to bed early. This morning, they let us sleep in, then they took us on an hour “bushwalk” (which was basically a stroll up the coast of a small bay (I’m not sure it was even jervis bay), it was pretty, but I live in a beach town with a beach that is twice as beautiful). Then, we boarded the buses, and went to a nearby beach on Jervis bay. Would have been nice, but it was about 55 degrees and overcast and we all sat there in jeans and sweatshirts before boarding the bus and headed 2 1/2 hours home. Oh well. I’ll know next time not to book a tour in a city not only I, but none of the Australians from my internship have ever heard of.
Then, I get back to an email saying my flight on thanksgiving day on Northwest airlines has been changed and what once was a direct flight from LAX to Milwaukee so I could make it home in time for thanksgiving, got magically changed to one with a stop over in minneapolis which I wont get home until 841. So that really SUCKS. Its definitely been a frustrating weekend, and now I have to mess around with the travel situation, b/c I’d prefer not to spend thanksgiving day (two of them, one in australia and one in the US) all by myself in airports. WHAT A HEADACHE. So needless to say, I’ve had better weekends here. But I figure I cant always blog about good stuff. Not everything in life always goes the way you want it to. All you can control is how you react to it.

Hey Traedogg,
Don’t worry about missing Thanksgiving day(s)… If I have anything to do with it, the real celebration won’t be starting until you are home! And no worries, I’m sure there’ll be enough pies to go around;) Keep on smiling and know that we always get through it some way or another!
Lots of luv from the city of madness. . .:)

Hi Traci,
Still enjoying your blogs. It sounds like you had a wonderful dinner with your roomie and her parents. Did they come down just to visit? Where do they live? I don’t know if kangaroo would taste like steak – but I’m glad you tried it.

Sorry to hear about your flights. Even though this was a “boring” trip for you, you will remember them all. It’s probably not all bad to have a relaxing one here and there.
We can’t wait to see you no matter when you arrive home!
Love,
Me
