Westport
I am here in the lovely, lovely little town of Westport. This is the cutest, quaintest little place I’ve seen. AND its bright sunshine outside! (I’ve been so lucky this trip – no – hmm… I don’t really want to say it – it’ll make it come). Anyway, I slept in proper this morning and did my laundry, so I will not be climbing Coagh Patrick, but I’m wandering around the town this afternoon, heading to a park and the quays, and then I’ll be going out to the foot of Croagh Patrick to see it and the famine memorial. Tonight I’m going to head to Matt Molloy’s (owned by the flutist of the Chieftains) for a session. Tomorrow I take the bus into Galway, to catch another bus back north to Clifden (why there isn’t a bus from Westport to Clifden is beyond me). Hee! I’ll be in Connemara tomorrow!
The landscape coming into Wesport yesterday was really, really beautiful too. More mountins and rocky outcroppings to break up the green fields. Oh – and I had a long chat with Paddy “the goose” Gallagher, a deep sea fisherman headed to the US soon, who mentioned halfway through the conversation that he just got out of jail! (All for the Republican cause, of course). Crazy stuff.
