Robbery

My *locked* day bag was stolen out of my *locked* hostel room. Here are bits of what’s happened from conversations I’ve been having:

I had 2 weeks of photos and a month of videos to burn. Really – the memory card is the only irreplacable thing. everything else is just a hassle and awful. I’ll have to stay here until I can get money and my new cards sent to me. It was the one day in 8 months when I hadn’t split up my valuables between my 2 bags – because I had travellers tummy and sat to watch 1 HOUR (that’s it!) of tv while it settled. I figured I’d change the stuff afterwards. I was watching Grey’s anatomy. Had I stayed in my room to read, everything would be fine now. I was going to burn my photos, but my upset tummy forced me to rush back.  Gah – I just – don’t know what to do now. I can’t go to Tasmania, but I don’t know how long I’ll have to stay around Melbourne now. It all just really sucks.

me: the ONE day I didn’t separate my valuables because I was physically ill and watching 1 hour of tv to recover
Karen: I’m so sorry to hear it.
me: no I cancelled all 3 cards that were stolen, and thank god I added on my WF account to my USAA account for transfers, so I should be able to get money within a day or so
my camera
my gorgeous camera
and I was considering burning off the photos today
2 weeks of photos
everything from Adelaide and Melbourne and ALL my aussie videos
my ipod
my wallet
300$
my mini binoculars

6:31 AM
small stuff like the actual bag and the physical wallet, that I’m going to have to replace
my ID cards
I’ll have to get a new CA ID, a new HI card

Karen: Is there an embassy nearby? What about your passport?

me: I have my passport and copies of my id and such

Karen: Well, that’s good.

me: I’ll have to figure out how much my insurance will pay for
all my photos are gone
the thing I always worried would happen
the reason I tried to burn every week
ALL of my Oz videos
and I took some really good photos here in Melbourne

Karen: your plane tickets? your clothes?

me: e tickets
no – I have those
my big bag wasn’t stolen
just my day bag
they have the guy on cctv – but the back of his head. I actually saw him come in. The bastard looked right at me and went around the corner behind my back and broke into my locked room

I have to look up receipts and serial numbers for them and the police
I was suppossed to go watch penguins tomorrow

Poor baby! It’s so awful reading how much you love Melbourne and what a terrific time you’re having…and now this.

I hope it doesn’t make you hate Melbourne forever.

I contacted Citibank and got the money transfer straightened out. (The first time, I sent it to the wrong Wells Fargo routing number. You gave me the correct routing number of your checking acct., but WF has a dif. number for its wire transfers.

You should have the money today. Lots of love, Mama
