December 26, 2004Tsunami
I'm in Goa, on the WEST coast of India, but amazingly, the Indonesia quake, and resulting tsunami has even affected life here, if only slightly: we just had a wave cover the dry sand on the beach in Arambol completely, and in Panjani, 30 km from here, the city is flooded after the wave caused the water level to rise 20 ft above normal. We are all fine and are just looking at websites to see the news from Sri Lanka and Thailand -- which seems to be getting worse by the minute. We are very lucky to be on the west coast and not the east!!! Comments
Hi Rolf, Good to know that you are alright! The devastation brought by the earthquake is enormous! I like reading about your adventures in India. I myself will be stuck in Holland in 2005 (see my email). Best wishes for the new year! Posted by: Esmé Berkhout on December 27, 2004 02:39 AMOoh, good to hear you're okay, I was a bit worried until I found out it was the East coast. What a crazy event, huh? My previous travel partner was on the beach somewhere in Sri Lanka, and now I haven't heard from her... and I've got tickets to head there in a few weeks... yikes! Tanni + Tim Posted by: tanni on December 27, 2004 11:56 PMRolf. Releived to hear you are well and alive. We are all in shock here as the news of the devastation comes in. Alinahs mum is missing from Thailand and Leora was in Sri Lanka though we beleive she got to high ground. That apart we have had a wonderful christmas. Love Hermas & Keri Posted by: Hermas on December 28, 2004 12:24 AMShuga, we hope to hear from you soon... we love you... babygirl Posted by: Shuga on December 28, 2004 12:01 PMHi bro ... But I found you......... and you're well. I'm so thankful. Take care, and keep in touch. I'll have to check out your pictures and blogs now that I found this site. Miss you. Happy New Year. (did you get my Christmas letter.....) -Deena Posted by: Deena on December 31, 2004 06:29 AMHey Rolf! Really glad to hear you are OK!! You are the last of our friends we couldn't account for who were in the region when the quake hit. I even emailed Richmond S. if he had heard from you. Take care!! Posted by: Kevin Wilkins on December 31, 2004 09:49 PMHi Rolf, Happy new year. Nice to hear that your are okey after the big tsumani. Greetings from Aarhus, Denmark Jens Posted by: Jens on January 3, 2005 11:10 PMHey Rolf, I am glad to hear you are fine. Hermas had let me know that you are on the other coast, and I gathered that you of all people did not go all the way to India to die in a Tsunami but I understand that it is devastating all over. My dear friend, Laura, is there, and is supposed to be shooting a video in Goa for the next couple of weeks. After that she returns to Calcutta where she's working with a group that helps teenage girls escape from the rampant trafficking. I would like to introduce you via email in case I didn't do this already: laura@spiderwoman.ws. You two should meet. Much love, Brianna Posted by: Brianna Shepard on January 4, 2005 01:53 AMHi Rolf, I am Brianna's friend who is working in Calcutta. I had no idea that the west was effected in any way...unbelievable. We also had water levels rise here, but only for a short time. The weather is unseasonably warm. I wanted to let you know that I will be arriving in Goa on the 15th of January to do some work at Baina Beach as well as having a little holiday at Benaulim Beach. Brianna has told me that you are an amazing photographer and I was wondering if you might have time to help with this project that I am doing. I am doing a follow-up piece on the demolition of the red-light area that happened in June 2004. Because of tension in the area, I may not be able to film but I was thinking that taking some good stills might be just as effective. Do you have a mobile number? I can be reached at 09830525064. In any case, it would be great to meet. How long will you be in Goa? I can be reached by email as well: laura@spiderwoman.ws Take good care and hope to hear from you.
