December 22, 2004Heading back to Goa for Xmas
I'm a bit behind on the blog -- but right now am back in Jodhpur, and just about to get on the train for a 33-hour journey back to the beaches of Goa, to spend the holidays with all the other travellers and tourists in India. Putting the bike on the train for the 1000 mile journey, will save me a week of riding, and cost a quarter of the price (petrol mainly, but also food and accommodation). I'm paying only $24 for both myself AND the bike! The trick was getting a ticket, as everything is booked solid while EVERYONE congregates on Goa for Xmas. Yesterday, I was number 232 on the waiting list (read: "forget it") for a place on the train. But when I asked the officious guy at the counter several times what HE would do in my place, he suddenly softened and gave me the name of the Big Boss at the railway offices in town. I went to see this gentleman, who welcomed me into his office, and when I explained my dilemma, he said "No problem, Sir!", and immediately promised to allocate me a sleeper-ticket from his "Emergency Quota" -- What a nice man, and what an amazing stroke of luck!!! Otherwise, I am falling behind on the blog, and having problems being motivated to spend so much time on it. During each week of wonderful travel exeriences -- and living wholly in the present -- I am spending one or even two days, stuck in a stuffy internet cafe in front of a computer screen, blogging about the past!!! I'm going to be doing some thinking over the next days to find a solution, on how to either shorten the entries, or change the focus to reinvigorate my motivation to spend the time this way. Thanks to all those who have left comments of encouragement. It is very gratifying to know one's efforts are valued! Happy Christmas to you and yours. Rolf Comments
You've got a informed, breezy voice that separates you from many travel bloggers. And I think that your route and travel methods are a bit more intrepid than most. So I'd like you to keep up the posts. I've enjoyed your smaller anecdotes and scenes. I liked the bits about the camel fair, Pune to Pushkar, and buying the motorcycle. Of course the photos are great. Personal stuff is what interests readers most too, but you're right to guard much of that. Perhaps you could fictionalize some of the less-incriminating stuff - change names and whatnot. Just use your best judgment and don't feel pressure to post if you don't want to. Perhaps it would be helpful to jot entry ideas down in a notebook at night or when you've got the inclination, then type them in at internet cafes when you get a chance. Rather than going to an internet cafe cold. It helped with my travel blog (www.vagabonding.com) to maintain a paper journal in blog-entry format. Why don't you tell us a bit more about your trip - how long you'll be gone for, where you're going, what you're hoping to find (or lose). Merry Christmas, Mike Pugh -- Chicago, USA Posted by: Mike Pugh on December 22, 2004 03:10 AMI second Mike in hoping you'll continue your blog. You do have a great voice. The amazing photos, the insights, the adveturous spirit... all things that make us strangers so interested in what you're doing. Hope you can find a way to keep it from being such a burden because your efforts are definitely valued. Posted by: Annette on December 22, 2004 03:29 AMYes, keep posting when you have time and inclination. I've fallen behind in reading, but I love being able to check in on you (although it does make me miss you). I put "No problem, Sir!" on a post-it next to my desk to help my recently poor client service attitude. I hope if you're not posting things because they're too personal you're still writing them down if you want to - that's what your gigantic gmail account is for! Merry Christmas to you too. Posted by: Kate on December 22, 2004 09:24 AMJust came upon your site..I was in Palolem the same time you were in Oct.. Have fun in Goa...am sure it will be crazy for the new years... I can't wait to get back... Posted by: Madhu on December 24, 2004 03:11 AMMerry Christmas!! Posted by: Annette on December 26, 2004 05:09 AM |
