November 27, 2004Tritsen Norbutse
Lopon Tenzin Namdak will be at the monastery tomorrow, but only for 5 days which makes me worried he won't have much time to answer my questions. I kind of wish I was back in Dolanji only because life was much easier, though boring. Practically everyone I wanted to speak to spoke english - all my meals were provided for and my room was half the cost of the room at Dawa's and you couldn't beat the view. Sadly I was just starting to gain acceptance, I'm not sure how much more there was to do there though unless Manu comes up with new more detailed questions. I suppose if I'm desperate I have most of their e-mail addresses. Today I wandered over to Tritsen Norbutse monastery and found the monks doing a puja. I met an Italian guy just out of college doing preliminary research for a grant to do research in the Dolpo region studying folklore a lot of which relates to Bon - He was there today trying to get his video translated. He is also interested in interviewing Lopon Tenzin Namdak. He wants to know about the history of Bon he said, and where some of the stories come from. He was very helpful in introducing me to a monk who knows limited english. Still I feel very far removed from the monastery - a 30 min walk I can no longer lounge in my room between times when I'm working - I'll have to go for a block of time and just hang out, absorbing everything. Unfortunately, It's an even smaller monastery than Menri. I guess I'll do the best I can, and work from there. Comments
