El Mirador Trek - Day 5
After a great night`s sleep without any late-night visits from Mayan mummies, I got up before wake-up call (!!) The others also seemed refreshed and ready for our next full day of hiking. The lively mood didn`t last long, however, as there was no more coffee and our eggs, carefully saved so we would have something real to eat before our big walking day, were scrambled with at least a kilo of salt. Nice... I started out hungry and remained that way for the rest of the day. How about going without breakfast and only being allocated 1 1/2 tiny pancakes for lunch!
Although I was hungry and pissed off with the person who purchased our supplies, the walk itself wasn`t as bad as Day 2. More of the same scenery, more looted Mayan graves, but no wildlife today.
We camped at super-clean and organized El Florido, our last Mayan site, where we were met by Umberto`s brother. He had come from Carmelita, over two hours away, on horseback to deliver eggs, beans, bread and water so we wouldn`t starve to death... The poor guy was promptly sent on another mission to get beer, cigarettes and cookies. Imagine riding another 5 hours in the dark, just to bring junk for your brother and his tour group! Just before 10pm he returned, and we all had a beer, the boys got their cigarettes and the girls their cookies before collapsing into bed.
I decided to sleep without my mosquito net (aka creepy crawlie protection) as a final test of my newfound spider non-phobia. I am pleased to announce that I didn`t have any incidents or nightmares :-)
