El Mirador Trek - Day 6

Who thought it would be a good idea to put refried black beans in a plastic pouch? They are vile, and we have had them too many times this trek. I will hopefully never have to eat pouch beans again...

By now you must have noticed how much I love mornings, haha...

El Florido is a tiny Mayan site, just a house and a few grave mounds guarded by one man and visited by very few. The house is really well preserved, and gives a good glimpse into how the Mayans lived. With a couple of different rooms, this was not the house of a poor family. However, regardless of rank, the Mayans buried their dead right around the perimiter of their family living area, thus the abundance of grave mounds.

After our last ruin we set off on our final walk of 2 1/2 hrs to Carmelita. By this time we were just marching on autopilot, ready to get to civilization for a wash... After 6 days without seeing any water except in our drinking bottles, you can imagine what we looked and smelt like... In between rounds of 20 questions, we all reverted to thoughts of "Ooohhh... Imagine a shower! Aaahhh... clean clothes! Aiaiai... a glass of fresh pressed juice! And oh my god... a decent meal!!" Of course the British among us dreamed of a bathtub and a tea with milk. We all dreamed of a beer.

On arrival in Carmelita we were treated to chicken and rice by Umberto´s lovely aunt, and OMG was it delicious after 6 days of the worst food I can imagine (OK, the gallina was great but we bought her ourselves...). In the "restaurant" we met two bright eyed and bushy tailed Guatemalans who were to be the first to attempt reaching El Mirador on mountain bike. They were all clean and excited, and among the friendliest people I´ve ever met. I hope they made it, and I also hope they have cushy bicycle seats ;-)

The drive back was hot and sweaty, and I pity the driver who had to spend three hours in the car with the lot of us... But after a shower all was well again, and we met up with the "team", including Umberto and Geronimo, at a cafe for a couple of good-bye beers.

Our trek was fantastic and I would have loved to stay longer in the jungle if there was a way to clean up. 6 days without washing is really pushing it...
