November 06, 2004Stings and Bites
In my first day of leading 3 American snorkelers as a student Dive Master, The first was during the first dive. Ricardo, Daniel, and I were following a rocky slope around the Sea Lion colony at Los Islotes when a large female began to swim around us. I thought it wanted to play so we stopped a minute, holding out our hands to entice the Lobo to play. As it swam past me I reached out my hand to pet it, and the Sea Lion turned its neck and head back as quickly as a mongoose and bit right onto the top of my hand. Luckily for me, either the female wasnt trying to hurt me or it's jaws arent that powerful. It broke the skin but the bite wasnt bad, blood didn't gush as I thought it would. It didn't start to bleed until I was out of the water. The bite was defensive, like when you are playing roughly with a dog and it bites too hard accidently. This Sea Lion has an appetite for human head! My next mishap was after this bite, heading back to the boat in a small current. I punctured my thumb ever slightly on a sharp rock and blood seeped from it as I tried to squeeze the little bit of rock from my thumb. The blood floated out of my thumb in a tiny stream, green from the depth of the water, looking like alien blood when floating in zero gravity. The last and worste mishap was on the third dive, at the sight known as Corallito, a shallow reef with lots of tropical fish. I felt a sting on the left side of my mask, on my hand, and on my neck. After the dive, on the boat, I applied Vinegar to the stings, but all agua mala (lit. meaning bad water) seems to appear the next day for me. I woke up this morning with a puffy and very itchy left cheek on my face, neck, and left hand. Comments
Eric....you will go to a doctor if neccessary..?? Is the hand or finger showing any signs of infection??? It is all part of the learning experience, as long as you survive. Posted by: Mum on November 7, 2004 11:07 AM |
